Irish Families Identified in the 1880 US Census Who were Living in the City of South Bend, St Joseph County, Indiana Ennumeration District 162, with Surnames O-R
A large concentration of Irish immigrants were living in the City of South Bend's District 162 around 1880. Many of the Irish in this area were employed by either the University of Notre Dame and the Singer Manufacturing Company. They lived on a cluster of streets in and around Notre Dame Avenue. District 162 appears to cover wards 2 and 4. There appears to have been a change in boundaries as many were in district 161 in the 1870 Census.
I plan to include Irish Descendents who were born in the U.S. but have at least one parent from Ireland, in this compilation. Many of the Irish in the City of South Bend had been here since the 1850's and by the 1880's their children who were born here could be having children.
I am in the process of tracing all of these South Bend Irish Families and have created pages on over 40 of them so far. I would love to hear from any descendents of these families so that we can share information and see how all of our ancestor's migration trails might have crossed. By working together, I think we will all have a much greater likelihood of finding our true origins in Ireland.
Special Note: Michael Robinson, an Irish Parish Priest (with Irish Parents) was listed as a border living with the Caldwell family on Notre Dame Street. He is listed on the A-C page.
