Irish Families living in St. Joseph County Indiana in the 1860 Census

There were 387 Irish-born individuals living in St. Joseph County, Indiana when the 1860 census was taken. This was an increase of 245 individuals since the 1850 St. Joseph County Census was conducted. One obvious difference is that Irish individuals have moved into both Olive and German Townships; none were present in 1850.

In the following sections I will document the Irish born Immigrants living in the different townships in and around South Bend when the 1860 Census was conducted. I will also include their family members although many were born in the United States. The 1860 census doesn't document the relation of members in the same household to the head of the house like later census records do. The 1860 census included a section entitled Persons over 20 years of age who cannot read and write. I will document this in a "read/write" section with a no if it was reported on a specific individual.
