The William Joyce and Maria Ormond Family of South Bend, Indiana: An Analysis of this Irish Family's Migration from Ireland to South Bend Indiana in South Bend St. Joseph and Sacred Heart Church Records, Census and other Resources
William and Maria Joyce most likely were married in Ireland (around 1863 according to the 1900 and 1910 Census) as their son Redmond was born in Ireland around 1862 according to the 1870 South Bend, Indiana census. Maria's maiden is obviously written phonetically with numerous variations in both the Sacred Heart and St Joseph Church records. It ranges from Ormond (clearly an Irish surname) to Armond (French, not likely since she was born in Ireland); however, their were numerous french families in the early Sacred Heart Church Records at Notre Dame, to Horman, Armant and Arman. The Surname Joyce is also written phonetically as Joice in numerous St Joseph Church Records. The core of this Irish family was part of the Portage Township, Ward 4 Irish Community in the 1870, 1880, 1900 and 1910 Census records for South Bend, St Joseph County, Indiana. They lived on Notre Dame Avenue as well as North St Peter Street surrounded by many other Irish families including my own!
The objective of this compilation is to try to establish the earliest possible evidence of this family in the United States through all available resources.
This will most definitely be a work in progress and all findings I speculate on would have to be proven for accuracy with Ireland and U.S. marriage records, church baptismal records and death records among other genealogical resources. Please use this information with that caveat in mind so that nothing is assumed and no stones are left unturned to assure it's your family and the connection is accurate. Please contact me if you feel that you are descended from this family or another South Bend, Indiana Irish Family so that we can share information, see if there were common migration trails followed and delve further back into their origins in Ireland!
Special Kudos to Julie Walker, a descendant of this family, whose contributions have filled in the gaps and significantly expanded the information on this webpage. Their family lore appears to support a possible origin in Waterford (as both Waterford and/or Cork were passed along in family lore). I think that obtaining a death record as well as an obituary (South Bend Tribune) on William Joyce could possibly yield big clues on William's parents names (particularly his mother's maiden name) which in turn could lead to discovery of his other siblings. The Naturalization records for William as well as Patrick could also be of value.
Research Observations and Analysis: It appears that Redmond and possibly Patrick were born in Ireland and that William and possibly John died in childhood (though I am uncertain if John was a child of William and Maria). According to the 1900 census, three of their 11 children perished. This page needs more extensive research such as obtaining marriage applications for some of the children, obituaries and death records which could yield huge clues. Death records of William and Maria could yield clues as to origins in Ireland as could obits from the South Bend Tribune Newspaper. The following information is a short summary on the children of William and Mary Joyce:
- The Patrick Joyce and Mariam Costello Family: It appears that Patrick Joyce , the son of Gulielmo Joyce and Maria ? married Mariam Costello on April 4, 1872 at St Joseph Church in South Bend, Indiana. That marriage record seems to imply that Patrick was born in Waterford, Ireland. This is further confirmed by an Ireland Births and Baptisms Record indicating he was born November 16, 1865 in Tallow, Waterford, Ireland. In the Indiana Marriage Collection, Patrick Joyce married Minnie Costello on January 12, 1897 in St Joseph County, Indiana. By the time the 1910 US Census is conducted, Patrick is listed as being widowed and is living with this parents on 1035 N St Peter St in South Bend. Patrick appears to have been naturalized on February 6, 1912 (Circuit Court South Bend, Indiana. At that time he resided at 1035 N St. Peter Street in South Bend. He was listed as Patrick Andrew Joyce in this record.
- The Edward Joyce and Rose Howlett? Family: It appears that Edward married Rose Howlett around 1887. They appear in the 1900 El Paso, Colorado Springs, Colorado Census living on 10 South Weber Street with no children, married 13 yrs. Edward was listed as being born December 1863 in Ireland and Rose in Michigan.
- The Margaret Joyce and Clarence Geo Klein Family: Margaret Joyce appears to have married Clarence Geo Klein in St Joseph County, Indiana on September 28, 1908 according to the Indiana Marriages 1811-1959 Collection. Her mother was Mary Ormond and father William Joyce.
- Elizabeth A Joyce and William P Cass Family: Elizabeth Joyce (born March 8, 1885 in South Bend, Indiana) married William P Cass on August 31, 1909 in St Joseph County, Indiana (Father William Joyce and mother Mary Ormond).
- James Joyce and Helen C Turnock Family: James Joyce married Helen C Turnock on September 24, 1913 in St. Joseph County, Indiana. In 1910 Helen is still living with her parents William and Catherine Turnock in Clay Township, St Joseph County, Indiana. By the time the 1920 Census is conducted, James and Helen are living with their two children Eileen and Catherina in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They remain in Tulsa, Oklahoma through the 1930 and 1940 census adding son William.
Of note: There was a Communion Class record from St Joseph Church for a Maria Joyce on June 19, 1910 that could be connected to this family in microfilm 1617236 item 2.
