The James (Jerry?) and Mary Haggerty (Hagerty) Family of South Bend, Indiana: An Analysis of the Core of This Family's Migration from Ireland to Canada to New York and on to South Bend, St Joseph County, Indiana
The James (Jerry) Hagerty Family appears in the South Bend, Indiana area in the U.S. 1860 St Joseph County, Indiana census. He is noted there with children Mella? (19), Timothy (17), John (16), Cornelius (15), Mary (13), Honora (11), Terry (8), James (7)and Michael (3). His wife is noticibly absent from the entry. I believe they appear 10 years earlier in the 1850 Addison, Steuben County, New York Census conducted on July 27, 1850. In this census parents Jerry Haggerty (45), Mary (35) both from Ireland, and children Ellen (11), Timothy (8), John (7), Cornelius (5), Mary (3), Honora (1) were noted. If my connections are correct, mother Mary Haggerty age 51 appears in the 1870 South Bend, Indiana census living with son John (26) Lawyer, Cornel (25) Blacksmith, Hannah (20), Jerry (18) painter, James (15), Michael (13) and Daniel (9). A 61 yr old John Haggerty lives 2 doors down. I have yet to ascertain proof of Mary's maiden name, but I believe that obtaining the marriage applications for some of their children like Timothy, John or Michael from the St Joseph County Archives would likely produce big clues.
The objective of this compilation is to try to establish the earliest possible evidence of this family in the United States through all available resources. I would love to hear from anyone who believes that they may be a descendent of this family so that we can work together to find their origins in Ireland and migration trail to the U.S. This will most definitely be a work in progress and all findings I speculate on would have to be proven for accuracy with Ireland and U.S. marriage records, church baptismal records and death records among other genealogical resources. Please use this information with that caveat in mind so that nothing is assumed and no stones are left unturned to assure it's your family and the connection is accurate.
There is a publication entitled the "Hagerty Family History" that was printed by the University of Notre Dame by Cornelius J Hagerty, CSC. A copy is available in the South Bend, Indiana Public Library as well. According to Cornelius, the Silverpolish company "William Haggerty and Sons" was founded in 1895. I think the likelihood is great that there is a connection to this family. (Hagerty; 1972).
Other Observations of possible interest: There is a Cedar Grove Cemetery entry on a page for L.W. McGann (I believe a funeral home) for Hagerty G & D (possible Grave and Digging?) on July 19, 1921 or 1922.

The following is a brief summary of what I have discovered about their children thus far:
- The Ellen Hagerty and George McCreary Family: Ellen Hagerty appears to have married Geo McCreary on November 16, 1862 in St Joseph County, Indiana according to the Indiana Marriage Collection on Ancestry.com.
- The Timothy Hagerty married Jane Martin on July 16, 1867 in St Joseph County, Indiana.
- Honora (Nora) Haggerty married Patrick M Tuohey on November 30, 1871 in St Joseph County, Indiana. They were living on South Street in South Bend, Indiana with children Simeon, James ,Patrick, Mary and Nora in 1880. Patrick and Nora resided at 524 S William Street according to the South Bend City Directory from at least 1904 to 1906 and Honora is noted as being the widow of Patrick, living on 419 S Taylor Street in the 1919 South Bend City Directory. I believe that Patrick Tuohey died on April 19, 1918 in South Bend, Indiana at the age of 70.
- Cornelius Hagerty married Bridget Sinnott in Cook County, Illinois on February 12, 1874. Cornelius (28, worked at the RR depot) was living with wife Bridget (22) and children John (4) and Mary (2) in South Bend, St Joseph County, Indiana at 82 Scott Street in 1880. By 1900 Bridget, was listed as a Widow livng at 522 South Scott with children John, Mary, Nellie, Cecelia, Cornelius J, Angelia J, George as well as her widowed mother Mary Sinnott (80). In 1910, Bridget lives on the same street with children Mary, Cecelia, Angela, Ganachia?, George and her mother Mary Sinnott (80). In 1920, Bridgett remains on 522 Scott Street with daughters Mary and Angela. There is an Illinois Northern District Naturalization index record for a Cornelius Hagerty who was born in Canada who naturalized on Octoboer 7, 1872 that could possibly be the same Cornelius. There is a death record for a John Hagerty, son of Cornelius Hagerty and Bridget Sinnott who died at age 62 on March 29, 1938 in Cook County, Illinois. His spouse was listed as Julia Hagerty.
- John Hagerty married Johanna Mansel on November 16, 1876 in St Joseph County, Indiana. When the 1860 Census was conducted for South Bend, Indiana they were living at 63 William Street with their two children Jeremiah (3) and William (1). I believe that they more than likely had at least 5 more children (John P, Johannah, Florence, Frank and Charlie) before their father John Hagerty died at the age of 46 on December 25, 1889 in South Bend, Indiana. I believe that widow Johanna then have married John's brother Daniel (who was born in May 1861) on January 30, 1894 in South Bend, Indiana.
- Daniel Hagerty married Johanna (Mansel) Hagerty (the widow of his brother John) on January 30, 1894 in St Joseph County, Indiana. When the 1900 US Census was conducted for South Bend, Indiana, Daniel Hagerty (39) and wife Johanah (42) who had been married 7 yrs, were living with their children Leo (5), Clement (4) and their adopted children Jerry (22), William (21), John P (19), Johannah (17), Florence (16), Frank (13) and Charlie (12). When the 1910 Census was conducted Johana (5) was again widowed living with children Frank, Floranse, Leo, Clement and Maria. I believe that Daniel died on April 21, 1908 in South Bend, Indiana at the age of 47 and wife Johanna died on October 2, 1914 in South Bend, Indiana. Their daughter johanna appears to have died earlier on December 19, 1908 in South Bend, Indiana as well.
- Mary Haggerty married Michael Casey in St Joseph County, Indiana on June 26, 1866. When the 1900 US census is conducted for South Bend, Portage Township, Indiana, Michael and Mary Casey are living at 420 Taylor Street with their 5 children (Mary, Katherine B, Joseph J, Helen P and James M). Two children appear to have died by this point. In 1910, they are living at 418 Taylor Street (Surname appears to be Curry on the entry) with their three children (Katherine, Ellen and James).
