The John Brady and Mary Kane Family of South Bend, Indiana: An Analysis of this Irish Family's Migration from Ireland to South Bend Indiana and Beyond in South Bend St. Joseph and Sacred Heart Church Records, Census and other Resources
John Brady and Mary Kane appear to have been married in Laporte, Indiana on May 28, 1859. Laporte is a Town about 36 miles west of South Bend. They appear to have arrived in the South Bend area sometime before 1868 (when their son Joseph was baptized at Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame). They were members of St Joseph Church, South Bend, Indiana according to their 1876 Census and resided on Notre Dame Avenue in the City of South Bend in Ward 4 on June 2 when the 1880 census was conducted.
The objective of this compilation is to try to establish the earliest possible evidence of this family in the United States through all available resources.
This will most definitely be a work in progress and all findings I speculate on would have to be proven for accuracy with Ireland and U.S. marriage records, church baptismal records and death records among other genealogical resources. Please use this information with that caveat in mind so that nothing is assumed and no stones are left unturned to assure it's your family and the connection is accurate. Regarding Surname Brady: There is an entry for a Maggie Brady? age ? (that is crossed out) looks like 4/30? Daughter born in Indiana, parents born in Ireland who is dead. This entry appears in district 162 of the 1880 South Bend, Indiana Census. She is listed with other deceased citizens with a notation that they should be entered and credited. I think she may have been born in 1879 and this a error in listing the month but I am not sure. Could it be a member of this Brady family such as Margaret Joannem that died within a year of birth?
