The West Cross and Round Tower at Monasterboice in County Louth, one of Ireland's Most Famous Monastic Settlements

Monasterboice was founded in the 6th century by St Builte. The site contains the ruins of several churches, a 10th century round tower and three most impressive high crosses like the West Cross shown in this picture. The West Cross is the tallest of the three remaining High Crosses at Monasterboice and the tallest High Cross in Ireland. Muiredach's Cross although shorter has impressive biblical carvings that are remarkably preserved. Only the top of the third cross remains. For detailed information on the biblical scenes depicted on these crosses at Monasterboice check out Mary Ann Sullivan's Digital Imaging Project on her Bluffton University website.
