The Edward McNulty and Francis Elizabeth Lahey Family of South Bend, Indiana Documented in the Census Records
Edward McNulty was the son of James McNulty and Margaret Whelan, friends of my second great grandparents who purportedly traveled by train with them from New York to South Bend. Edward was the eldest son of James and Margaret and was born in New York. According to a record uncovered at LDS website familysearch.org in the Michigan Marriages 1868-1925, Edw McNulty of South Bend, Indiana (48, born in New York) son of James McNulty (mom's maiden name Whalan) married Francis E Lahey of Niles, Michigan (36, born in Niles Michigan) daughter of William Lahey (mom's maiden name Whalan too?) on July 15, 1906 in Niles, Berrien, Michigan. Edward was a city Fireman. Edward McNulty died at the age of 71 on April 25, 1928 at his home at 905 Notre Dame Avenue, according to the obituary that was in the South Bend Tribune on the same day (obtained from the South Bend Genealogical Society). He worked in the Fire Department for 31 years and had retired about 1924. Funeral Services were held at St Joseph's Catholic Church and the Rev. William P Lennartz officiated. He was to be buried at Highland Cemetary. According to the obituary he was born in South Bend Indiana on November 24 1856 (I think this is an error and that it was New York). Survivors were listed as wife Elizabeth, Son William Edward of Sioux Falls South Dakota, Sister Mrs J E Kindig of South Bend and three brothers: Michael of Traverse City, Michigan, Thomas of Chicago Illinois and James of Newton Iowa. He was a wagon driver at the fire department with the Central company, (a job he held since August 19, 1893), later with Hose number 1, Hose Number 3 and finally with Hose Number 7. Once vehicles replaced the horse drawn wagon he became a pipeman at Hose Number 7. (South Bend Tribune, South Bend Indiana 4/25/1928.
