Gahagan (Geoghegan, Gaughan, Goaghan, Goghan) Families Identified in the Manchester, Lancashire, England Census Records, Possible Origins in Ireland and Links Between the Census Years

The Surname Gahagan and variations such as Gaughan, Geoghegan, Goaghan, Goghan etc, are scattered throughout the different districts of the Manchester, England Census Records. The majority of these Gahagan families are documented as being born in Ireland. Some of the later census years begin giving counties of birth. It is my objective in this section to analyze the various Gahagan Families (and all variations) found in the Manchester Civil Parish, Lancashire England Census records between 1841 and 1911 to look for possible origins and connections between the lines. This is a work in progress and will be added to as I work my way through the census. My intention is to try to identify migration trails from Ireland.

It is clear from my initial research in the Manchester Census records that all four of the Surnames I am tracking were present in Manchester Civil Parish in the 1851 Census. An initial search found the following Gahagan variants in the subregistration districts of the Manchester 1841 census: Gahagans in the Tib Street Barracks (Soldiers), Gaughans in Cheetham, Gaughans in St George, Geoghans, Gagons and Gogins in Ancoats, Geoghegan and Geohagan in Deansgate, Gogan in Chorlton Upon Medlock and Geagens in London Road. St. George Sub Registration District will be the starting point for my research as there were Brennans, Corcorans and Coffees and Coffeys there.

Keep in mind that the connections I draw are what appear to me to be the same family and need to be further analyzed to make sure the conclusion is correct (hopefully with supporting evidence such as GRO marriage records and baptismal records). They are something to build upon and prove. I would welcome all feedback on this effort. Only through input from other Gahagan (Geoghegan, Gaughan, etc) Descendents will we find how we might all be related.

I am in the process of identifying specific details on the Irish documented in the 1851 Manchester Civil Parish, St George Sub Registration District, Districts 1a- 1z on an Irish in Manchester-St George 1851 page and the following districts of the Manchester St George District 1841 census: Districts 1-15, Districts 16-29. My intent is to finish the Manchester St George 1841 census first and then resume documenting the Irish in the 1851 Manchester St George Census.

This is a work in progress!
