Brennan Families from the Townland of Lisduff, County Mayo Ireland: An Analysis of their presence in the Kiltimagh Catholic Church, Griffith's Valuation, Ireland Census and other Records
Lisduff was a relatively small Townland in Killedan Civil Parish, County Mayo when the Griffith's Valuation was conducted in 1856, being composed of just over 287 acres. Nineteen individuals were listed as occupiers of Parcels in Lisduff at that time and they all had Patrick Tuohy as their landlord. There was nothing of economic significance noted at that time in Lisduff. Phelim, John, Patrick and Thomas Brennan were among these occupiers (keep in mind that only those that leased property of some sort are listed on the Griffith's Valuation, not their families that might be living with them). I will document the Brennans in the Lisduff Griffith's Valuation at the top of this compilation as I am uncertain to which families they belong at this point.
I have identified 16 different Brennan families that specifically list Lisduff as their Townland of residence in the Kiltimagh film 926012. They will be presented below by spouse's surname.
There were seven families in the 1901 Ireland Census for Lisduff that had Brennan's in their households and eight families in the 1911 Census. I have listed them in order by their house number unless I have been able to associate them with a family in the church records.
Regarding Surname Berne, Byrne: There were several other Berne, Byrne families noted in these parish records including Brigida Brenan/Martinus Berne who were married in 1840 (no Town of residence given but Richard Gahagan was a sponsor), Mary Byrne/Thomas Brennan in Killedan, Martin Brennan, Honor Byrne in Cartron and John Brennan/Margt Byrne in Kiltimagh.
Regarding the Patrick Brennan and Mary Brennan Family: There were marriages for three Pat and Mary Brennan's in this fllm (1855 and 1857 x2) and a baptism for a Thos of Pat and Mary Brennan from Killedan. The Patrick and Mary Brennan in House 21 of the Lisduff 1901 Census appears to be a close match to their likely ages (55,50) but there is no way to be sure at this point.
Regarding Surname Conlon: There were numerous Brennan/Conlon families in this film aside from those listed in the compilation below including: Cath Brennan/Thomas Conlon from Treenkeel, Susan Brennan/Thoms Conlon from Carrick and 3 marriages in which a Townland was not given: Joannus Brenan/Anna Conlon (1837), Patritius Brenan/Bridgeta Conlon (1870) and Petrus Conlon/Brigida Brennan (1876).
Regarding Surname Doyle: There were several other Doyle families in this film aside from those listed below including Richard Brennan/Bridget Doyle from Aitavalla (possibly Attavally) and Currahoor, Catherine Brennan/Michael Doyle (1844), Margaret Brennan/Thomas Doyle from Kiltimagh and Brigt Brennan/ Thomas Doyle from Cleragh
Regarding Surname Forkin: There were four other Brennan/Forkin Marriages in this microfilm in which no Townland of residence is given including Thadeus Brenan/Sabina Forkin (1864), Maria Brenan/Antonius Forkin (1845), Brigida Brenan/Patritius Forkin (1835) and Michl Brenan/Winifrida Forkin (1837).
Regarding Surname Ivers: An online post on the Rootsweb Kiltimagh archives notes that Michael son of Patrick Brennan/Mary Ivers may have married Eliza Gilligan in Salford. If this is the case, their marriage record may be the following from the Free BMD England- Michael Brannan married Elizabeth Gilligan quarter ending September 1899 Salford Volume 8d, Page 230. Of further interest is a Mary Ivers, possibly a relative? age 22, Servant with last residence Kiltimagh, Ireland who traveled on the Cedric from Liverpool to New York on March 20, 1905 (paid for by her mother Maggie) enroute to Jersey City.
