A Brief Synopsis of the Irish in the Leeds North Sub Registration Districts 2Q-2Z plus the Leeds Cavalry Barracks and District Moral and Industrial Training School for Pauper Children of Leeds Civil Parish in the 1851 Census, and the Occupations they Held

Leeds Town Civil Parish, North Leeds Sub Registration District covers 89 Districts (1a-1x and 2a-2z) plus the Leeds Cavalry Barracks and the District Moral and Industrial Training School for the Pauper Children of the Township of Leeds in the 1851 census. Districts 1a-1g are covered on this first page of this compilation and districts 1h-1p on the 2nd page, 1q-1x on the third page, districts 2a-2ff on the fourth page and districts 2g-2p on the fifth page.

The following compilation includes the locations of the Irish-born and observations noted in districts 2p-2z, the Leeds Cavalry Barracks plus the District Moral and Industrial Training School for the Pauper Children of Leeds Civil Parish, North Leeds Sub Registration District of the 1851 Census.

There was only one Irish-born individual in District 2q of the 1851 Leeds, Leeds North Census: Patrick Harrold, a Watchman at Lawson Lyons? who was born in Ireland living at the Hope Foundry on Mab (likely Mabgate).

Their were only four Irish-born individuals in District 2r: Jane Grapham who was from County Down, Ireland living on Union Row (her husband John was a Joiner from Caldbeck Yorkshire and four sons from Leeds), James Marr a Nail Maker from Ireland living on Turnstall's Fold (wife Elizabeth was from Durham, 1 son from Durham, 1 from Leeds), John Bowes an Attorney Clerk from Ireland living on Waterloo Court (wife Rebecca from Liverpool and daughter from Leeds) and Daniel Murphy a Journeyman Tailor living on Quarry Hill who was also born in Ireland.

There were 7 entries with Irish-born family members in District 2s. The following Irish immigrants were living on Church Street including: William Ellis (Block Cutter) who was born in Dublin, Ireland, his wife Mary from Wicklow, Ireland (plus daughter Mary from Huddersfield, Ann from Leeds and son George from Leeds) and Esther Dodgson who was born in Ireland (husband Reuben a Private Watchman was from Kippax Yorkshire, son from Leeds). There were four Irish immigrants living on Middle Fold including: Joseph Leach, a Pauper and former Cloth Dresser, was born in Ireland (wife Mary and 3 kids from Leeds), Anthony Ruth (Hand Loom Weaver) was born in Queens County, Ireland (wife Elizabeth and daughters Mary and Elizabeth were born in Leeds), Patrick Hoban (Stuff Weaver) was born in Roscrea, County Tipperary, Ireland (wife Grace and children John, Francis, Mary, George, Sonia, Elizabeth Sarah Ann were all born in Leeds) and Elisabeth Reed, a widowed Washerwoman was born in Ireland. Francis Powell (Wood Sawyer), living on Ward's Fold, was born in Ireland (wife Mary, daughter Martha Ann and mother in law Martha Robinson were born in Leeds).

There were two Irish immigrant families in District 2t: Mary Stevens, a Dressmaker and her son Richard (Spindle Maker) were born in Cork, Ireland (grandchildren George and William were born in Leeds, James and Ezekiel in Mirfield, Yorkshire). They were living on Rider Street. John Wright, a Chelsea Pensioner was born in Tipperary, Ireland (wife Mary was born in Patrington, Yorkkshire) and they were living on Pleasant Row.

The Irish-born in District 2u were living on Bunnand Lofts, Anchor Street, Pea Street and Waterloo Place. There were no place names of origin in Ireland given for this district. They are presented here by occupation and surname: Pauper (Perkinson), Stuff Weaver (Bray, Dunn), Frame Tenter Flax Mill (Birgis), Reeler in Flax Mill (Birgis), Carder in Flax Mill (Roads), Bobbin Carrier (Roads), Hawker of Tape (Roads) and three without occupations (Elliot, Lodge and Peacock).

The Irish-born in District 2v were living on Windsor Street, York Road, Bread Street, Wheat Street and Acorn Street. There were no place names of origin in Ireland given. The vast majority were employed in the Textile Industry including: Canvas Weavers (Best, Gorman-3, Lawley, Thompson and Wright), Hand Loom Weaver (Fanning), Hand Loom Weaver of Linen (Ambrose), Linen Weaver (Connor, Cummins, Flanagan), Power Loom Weaver (Ambrose-2), Cloth Weavers (Armstead, Walls), Cloth Burler (Armstead), Blacking Maker (Morris), Stuff Weaver (Daley, Murphy), Flax Dresser (Ambrose), Bobbin Winder (Crossin, Ambrose), Worsted Reeler (Murphy), Machine Tender (Armstead) and Seamstress (Peel). The remaining Irish immigrants listed the following occupations: (Pensioner 95th Regiment Infantry (Cass), Pensioner 53rd Regiment Infantry (Gorman), Errand Boy (Armstead) and four without occupations (Crawley, Kelly, Roberts, Slowen).

The Irish-born in District 2w were living on Windsor Street, Edgar Street, Riding Row, Plate Street and Walker's Square. Joseph Thompson, a Journeyman Shoemaker, living on Windsor Street with the Cooke family from Hull, was born in Queens County, Ireland. He is the only Irish immigrant with a documented place of origin in Ireland documented. The majority of the other Irish immigrants were employed in the Textile Industry including Weavers (Brophy and Purcell), Woolen Weaver (Purcell), Flax Spinner (Colberth), Spinner (Colberth), Woolen Weaver (Colberth), Linen Weaver (Ambrose, Best, Boyd, Moore-2 and Quinlan) and a Worker in a Flax Mill (Ambrose). There were also three other Shoemakers (Brtown, Oxbarry and Turner), a Coach Maker (McNamara) and 4 listed without occupations (Connell, Gould, Purcell and Ryan).

The Irish-born in District 2x were living on Garden Street, Upper Garden Street, Accomodation Street and Springfield Terrace. There was one Irish immigrant from County Sligo: Margaret Davis, a Servant. Hannah Jackson was born in County Kerry, Ireland (Her husband Robert was a Grocer from Morley, Leeds and daughter Ann and grandchildren from Leeds). Isaac Bedford, a Mechanic was born in County Kilkenny, Ireland; his father Isaac a Timekeeper at the Mill and mother Sarah were born in Yorkshire, England. He had a brother Frederick from Frederickston, New Brunswick, brother Charles from St John's Newfoundland and 3 siblings from Leeds. Alexander Bingham (Paper Stainer) was born in Dublin, Ireland (wife Mary Ann and son William were born in Leeds). Agnes Reed was born in Belfast, Ireland (husband Archbald a Leather Warehouseman and 4 kids were born in Leeds) and John Heaney (Tailor) was born in Belfast (wife Betsey was born in Cheshire, two kids in Liverpool and two in Leeds). Owen Quin (Shopkeeper) was born in County Tyrone, Ireland (wife Ruth was born in Halifax and daughter Ann in Bellary E. Indies). The only other Irish immigrant in this district was Hugh Grant a Catholic School Master who was born in Ireland.

There was only one Irish immigrant in District 2y: Archibald Bryce, a Painter living on Rock Street who was born in Ireland (his wife Jane was born in Leeds).

There were only 4 families with Irish born in District 2z and none of the entries gave places of origin in Ireland. They were living on Mabgate, Penn Street, Cromwell Street and Linsley Row. None of the Irish-born were listed with occupations and all were females with male spouses born in England including Surnames Ambler (plus two children born in Ireland), Doherty, Hardcastle and Riley.

The Irish-born documented in the District Leeds Cavalry Barracks came from all over Ireland and places of origin are given for many. The following Irish immigrants were born in County Roscommon: Michael Birwin, a Private in the 46th Regiment and Laborer was from Roscommon, Roscommon, Ireland. Bartly Leadon also a Private in the 46th Regiment and Laborer was born in Boyle, Roscommon. Alexander Keogh was born in Boyle, Ireland (there is a Boyle in both Roscommon and Queen's County, Ireland. His mother Mary was born in Clonmel, Ireland and his father Jacob was from Middlesex, England.

John Doherty and John Maguire, Privates in the 46th Regiment and Laborers were born in Clare, Killshanny, Ireland and Patrick Smith a Private in the same Regiment was born in Fermanagh, Clare, Ireland. Catherine Hopkins a Servant was born in Crossmaylinor, Ireland (this may be Crossmolina in County Mayo, Ireland). James Webb, a Private in the 46th Regiment and Laborer was born in Cork, Waters Grass Hill in Ireland and James Melman a Private in the same Regiment/Laborer was born in Cork, St Mary's, Ireland. Catherine Sargeant was born in Clonmel, Ireland (there is a Clonmel in both Tipperary and Waterford), her husband James Was born in Dorsetshire and daughter Elizabeth in Leeds. Edward Kennelly a widowed Private in the 46th Regiment and Laborer was born in Moreland, Tipperary, Ireland. Francis O'Brien a Private in the 46th Regiment and Laborer was born in Fermannagh, Tipperary and Mathew Phelan a Private in the same Regiment and Laborer was born in Upper Church, Tipperary. Thomas Serson a Private in the 2nd Dr. Guards and Servant was born in Birr, Tipperary. Michael Toomer a Sergeant in the 2nd Dr. Guard/Miller was born in Cahir, Ireland (likely Tipperary).

Roger Godsden a Private in the 2nd Dr. Guards/Clerk was born in Waterford, Ireland. Moses Wafer a Private in the 46th Regiment/Laborer was born in Wexford, Gowery, Ireland. James Kepple a Private in the same Regiment/Laborer was born in Wexford, Goray, Ireland. Henry F Sandwith, a Lieutenant in the 46th Regiment was born in Wexford, Ireland.
