Brennan Families from the Townland of Kiltimagh, County Mayo Ireland: An Analysis of their presence in the Kiltimagh Catholic Church, Griffith's Valuation, Ireland Census and other Records

Kiltimagh is a Townland in Killedan Civil Parish of County Mayo Ireland. When the Griffith's Valuation was conducted for Killedan Civil Parish in 1856, Kiltamagh was composed of 267 acres. The Town of Kiltamagh is incorporated into three different Townlands: Cordarragh, Gortgarve and Kiltamagh.

The Griffith's Valuation showed the following Brennans: Mary Brennan was listed as an occupier of a House in the Town of Kiltamagh within the Townland of Cordarragh, Patrick and Michael Brennan held parcels in the Town of Kiltamagh within Gortgarve, Winifred Brennan held Land and a House and Michael Brennan held Land in the Townland of Kiltamagh and Michael, Catherine, Felim and Michael Brennan (Woods) held parcels in the Kiltamagh that lies within the Townland of Kiltamagh. Michael Brennan was also listed as a landlord for Thomas and Martin Gill in the Town of Kiltamagh in the Townland of Kiltamagh.

Brennans in the Kiltamagh Griffith's Valuation will be presented first as I am uncertain at this point how to link them to families, followed by the Ireland Census unless I can connect them to a specific family in the church records. The Church records will be presented alphabetically by spouse's surname and any census records by the head of household followed by their children. Any records that I find for Brennans from Kiltimagh that I can't associate with a specific family will be noted alphabetically by spouses surname or after the Ireland Census records if they weren't married.

When the Griffith's Valuation was conducted for Killedan Civil Parish in 1856, there was a Roman Catholic Chapel in the Town of Kiltimagh that lies within the Townland of Cordarragh.

Brennans in the Catholic Parish Records: The Town and Townland of Kiltamagh were part of Kiltamagh Roman Catholic Parish. I have identifed 18 different Brennan families in microfilm 926012 that specifically list Kiltamagh as their Townland of residence.

The 1901 Ireland Census for Kiltimagh listred 6 Brennan families. They were living on Main Street, Aiden Street, Pound Street and Chapel Street.

Samuel Lewis refers to a Thursday market being held in the Town of "Cultymough, or Newtown-Brown." It is my assumption that Cultymough is the same as Kiltimagh, a town that was incorporated into the Townlands of Cordarragh, Gortgarve and Kiltimagh when the Griffiths Valuation was conducted. (Lewis, 1837; 1984, p. 135). There was no mention of this market in the 1852-53 report according to W.H. Crawford's essay in the book "A Various Country, Essays in Mayo History 1500-1900. (Gillespie; Crawford, 1987, p. 89).

From an economic standpoint, the Town of Kiltimagh that is part of the Townlands of Cordarragh, Kiltamagh and Gortgarve appears to be the hub of most of the activity in Killedan Civil Parish. The Town of Kiltamagh within the Townland of Kiltamagh was the location for the "Tolls and Customs." James Jordan was the occupier and Geo Eakins Browne the Landlord for this economically important parcel. The Townland of Kiltimagh was home to a farmhouse and the Town of Kiltimagh, in addition to the Tolls and Customs, had a Constabulary Force Police Barracks, the Swineford Union Dispensary, three building grounds and ruins. As far as education goes, there was a Board of Education Female National School in the town of Kiltimagh that lies within the Townland of Kiltamagh

In the portion of the Town of Kiltimagh that lies within the Townland of Kiltamagh, there was the Constabulary Force Police Barrack and the Swineford Union Dispensary. The Town of Kiltimagh in the Townland of Cordarragh had a pound, building ground and Ball-alley. I have been unable to determine what a Ball-alley is at this point. The Town of Kiltimagh within the Townland of Gortgarve had a forge, farmhouse and ruins.

Regarding the Surname Lavin: There were several other Lavins married to Brennans in this film that are not listed as being from Kiltimagh: Thomas Brennan and Catherine Lavin from Pullagh; Patritius Brenan and Eliza Lavin as well as Patritius Brennan and Honoria Lavin from Cloondoolough.

Brennan Families from Kiltimagh Catholic Parish Traced:

  1. The Thomas Michael Brennan and Mary Kelly Family of Ballyglass, Killedan Civil Parish, Kiltimagh Catholic Parish, County Mayo Ireland: An Analysis of this Family's origins in the Ballyglass, Carrowreagh, area of County Mayo and Their Descendants Migration to Leeds Yorkshire, Liverpool, Lancashire, England and Beyond

Regarding the Surname McNichols: There is an Ann Brennan/Thomas McNicholas who were married February 8, 1861. This may or may not be Bridget Brennan/Thomas McNicholas who had their son Michl baptized in Kiltimagh in 1865. There also was a Mary Brennan and Thomas McNicholas who had children baptized in 1876, 1877 and 1879. Comgerra is the townland given with this family. Could this possibly be Carrownageeragh, a Townland in Killedan Civil Parish.

Regarding John Brennan/Charlotte Tasker family: I wouldn't have been able to identify this family's connection with Kiltimagh if it weren't for the post made by Caroline on the Mayo Moves site. I am still unsure at this point if I have identified this John in the parish microfilm.

If you feel that your Brennan ancestors may have originated from Kiltamagh or another Townland in area around Kiltamagh please contact me so that we can compare findings, confirm the accuracy of the page and advance the research of all Brennan decendents trying to find their ancestors. I am also tracing the Brennans from the Connacht area of Ireland that emigrated to England, settled there or moved on to the U.S. particularly in Huddersfield and Leeds Yorkshire and Manchester and Liverpool Lancashire to see if I can link them to the Brennan families I am identifying in Irish Church records. I welcome any and all feedback! This is a work in progress and will be added to over time!
