The Martin Corcoran and Bridget Mullahy Family of Gortskehy, Kilcommon Civil Parish, County Mayo, Ireland: An analysis of their origins in County Mayo, Ireland and the Migration of Some of Their Children to the United States

Martin Corcoran and Bridget Mullahy were married in Kilcommon Civil Parish, Roundfort Catholic Parish, County Mayo on February 26, 1870. This family is clearly associated with the Townland of Gortskehy, a Townland that lies east of Annefield, southeast of Bushfield and further southeast of Hollymount which was the the primary Market Town for this parish in the 19th century.

Rob McFadden, a Genealogist and descendent of this line is the primary inspiration for this page. I wouldn't have connected the dots if it weren't for his indepth research into this family. Martin and Bridget appear to have had 7 children (only 5 of which were still living as of the 1911 Ireland Census) and they included John, Honor, Martin, Patrick, Mary, possibly Michael (who was married to Kate Slymon) and one other who is yet to be identifed. Rob has obtained the Civil Marriage Record for Martin Corcoran and Bridget Mullahy; among its valuable information was Martin's father Michael Corcoran and Bridget's father Patrick Mullahy.

The destination of John, Honor, Martin and Mary at this point are unknown. Patrick can clearly be traced to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; his trail will be documented below. It appears that Michael may be an older brother of Patrick but a baptismal record is yet for be uncovered to have definitive proof. Patrick appears to have filed his intent to become a US citizen on July 13, 1915 with the New York City Supreme Court, New York.

Please email if you feel that you may be descended from this Corcoran family or have Corcorans in and around the Townlands of Hollymount, Bushfield, Annfield, Gortskehy or even Ballindine, Mayo to the north. More pieces of the puzzle will help us all to trace this family back further. The Kilcommon area of Mayo had a huge population drop before, during and after the famine; Only Patrick is identified as still living with his parents in Gortskehy in the 1911 census.

This will most definitely be a work in progress and all findings I speculate on would have to be proven for accuracy with Ireland Civil Marriage Records, church baptismal records and death records among other genealogical records. Please use this information with that caveat in mind so that nothing is assumed and no stones are left unturned to assure it's your family and the connection is accurate.
