The William Brennan (Brannen) and Elizabeth Reid (Read)Family of Huddersfield England: An analysis of their Migration from Huddersfield England (William) to Adelaide, South Australia and Back

The Connaught Counties of Galway, Roscommon, Mayo and Sligo are heavily represented in the Huddersfield England Census Records when the county names are given as a place of birth. The amazing research compiled on the Irish in England by great authors like Donald Macraid, Roger Swift, Donald E Jordan Junior, Sheridan Gilley, Kevin O'Connor, John Belchem, Frank Boyce and L. W. Brady among others seems to support repeated migration trails from certain counties in Ireland to certain places in England.

My objective in this research is to analyze the Brennan Families in Huddersfield England Census records over the years to see migration pattern trends from certain counties, possible Civil Parishes in Ireland and even with families of the surname itself. I hope to eventually connect them to the Brennans that I am identifying in the Catholic Church Records in both County Mayo and County Roscommon Ireland. This will most definitely be a work in progress and all findings I speculate on would have to be proven for accuracy with GRO of England marriage records, church baptismal records and death records among other genealogical records. Please use this information with that caveat in mind so that nothing is assumed and no stones are left unturned to assure it's your family and the connection is accurate.

Research Observations: I believe that William Brennan is the son of Patrick Brennan and Ellen Morris who were both born in Ireland. I found a baptismal record for William, son of Patrick Brannan and Ellen Morris in the St. Patrick's Church records on September? 25, 1838. There was a Eleanor Brennan (30) Lodging Housekeeper in the 1841 Huddersfield Census in District 3 with son William (2) and Mina? 3 mos. who may be part of his family. In the 1851 census Patrick Brannan 34, Ellen Brennan (36), William (12), Mary Ann (10), James 8, Anna (6), Roger (4) and John H (6 mos) were all living together on Kirkgate. I did not see William (who would have been 22 in the 1861 census, but I did find a marriage record for a William Brennen and an Elizabeth Read in the Australia Marriage Index 1788-1980 in ancestry.com on March 23, 1861 in Adelaide South Australia. His father was listed as Patrick and hers was James. What follows is some rudimentary research on this family. There are some discrepancies (such as the 1841 census) and records that need to be added as time permits. I believe that William likely died in Huddersfield September 1897, but I am less than certain about Elizabeth's demise. There was an Elizabeth Ann Brennan who died in March 1907 in Huddersfield at the age of 81, but this is about 11 years older than I would have expected her to be. I am still working my way through the Huddersfield Census records and will likely find her somewhere in the 1901 census is she was still alive. I would love to hear from anyone who has connections to this family or William's Irish Born parents! Please contact me with suggestions, corrections, etc., to improve the contents of this page. The feedback will help all Brennan Researchers!

Some Confirmation: An Australian Descendent of this family has graciously shared some findings on this family. A cousin of hers has published a book entitled "Lured from their Native Land" that details the history of the Read family that appears to corroborate most of the information presented below. One conflict I see if that they show this family leaving Australia in 1873 to come to Huddersfield and I show what I thought was them in the 1871, 1881 and 1891 Huddersfield census listed below. Williams death in 1897 appears to be confirmed as they show him being buried in 1897 at Edgerton Cemetery in Huddersfield. We still need confirmation about William's parents Patrick and Ellen Morris (and what became of them) and when and where William's wife Elizabeth died. They show William leaving Huddersfield for Australia around 1858, which would match the last census record I found him in (1851) and the Australian Marriage Record (1861). We could use some feedback from other descendents who may be related to this line to open up the tree back to Ireland. Every piece helps solve the puzzle!
