The John and Ann Brennan (Brannan) Family of Huddersfield England: An analysis of their Migration from Castlerea, County Roscommon Ireland to Huddersfield England

The Connaught Counties of Galway, Roscommon, Mayo and Sligo are heavily represented in the Huddersfield England Census Records when the county names are given as a place of birth. The amazing research compiled on the Irish in England by great authors like Donald Macraid, Roger Swift, Donald E Jordan Junior, Sheridan Gilley, Kevin O'Connor, John Belchem, Frank Boyce and L. W. Brady among others seems to support repeated migration trails from certain counties in Ireland to certain places in England.

My objective in this research is to analyze the Brennan Families in Huddersfield England Census records over the years to see migration pattern trends from certain counties, possible Civil Parishes in Ireland and even with families of the surname itself. I hope to eventually connect them to the Brennans that I am identifying in the Catholic Church Records in both County Mayo and County Roscommon Ireland. This will most definitely be a work in progress and all findings I speculate on would have to be proven for accuracy with GRO of England marriage records, church baptismal records and death records among other genealogical records. Please use this information with that caveat in mind so that nothing is assumed and no stones are left unturned to assure it's your family and the connection is accurate.

Analysis of Findings: John and Ann Brennan likely married in Castlerea, County Roscommon, Ireland sometime before 1855 when their first son Thomas was born. The Castlerea RCP microfilm is not available through the LDS, but is available through the NLI or a record could be requested from the Irish History Foundation Database.

There is confirming evidence of the marriage of John Brennan and Ann Carty on 12/27/1854 in the Castlerea Records (this thanks to the research of Genealogist Gerry who is researching this line). D. Mullarkey, another Genealogist who is descended from this line graciously contributed a multitude of information that helped link the families of two of John and Ann's sons, Thomas and John. My objective in these pages is to trace the Brennan families from Ireland to their destinations in England (and possibly beyond). To minimize download times, it is beyond the scope of this website to document more extensively than two generations on one page, but the Genealogists who have contributed to this page like Gerry and D Mullarkey have done extensive research on this family, and other descendents feedback could be valuable in filling in the missing pieces of this family tree!

Baptismal records for Michael, Bridget, Patrick and Ann are also likely available given the later date of their births. I believe I have found the marriage records for two of the children: Bridget (Conboy) and Ann (Tahhany or Tarney). If this research is confirmed, they could be obtained through the GRO in England (re-verify the free BMD index info first!). I couldn't find Ann or John Brennan in the 1891 census records but I still have to do a thorough search of that census year in Huddersfield. I could find only two deaths for John Brennan or variations in Huddersfield between March 1880 and Dec 1891: John Brennan in December 1880 (too early) and John Edward Brannan in September 1883. He could have died or be living elsewhere. I found a possible death record in the Free BMD England records for Bridget Conboy who was born about 1860 and died at the age of 60 in March 1920 volume 9b, page 819.

I welcome any and all feedback or corrections- they benefit us all. If you believe that your ancestors might be related to this family please contact me!
