The Edward and Bridget (Mary) Brannan Family of Huddersfield England: An Analysis of their Migration from County Galway and County Meath, Ireland to Huddersfield, England on to America and back to Huddersfield
The Connaught Counties of Galway, Roscommon, Mayo and Sligo are heavily represented in the Huddersfield England Census Records when the county names are given as a place of birth. The amazing research compiled on the Irish in England by great authors like Donald Macraid, Roger Swift, Donald E Jordan Junior, Sheridan Gilley, Kevin O'Connor, John Belchem, Frank Boyce and L. W. Brady among others seems to support repeated migration trails from certain counties in Ireland to certain places in England.
This will most definitely be a work in progress and all findings I speculate on would have to be proven for accuracy with GRO of England marriage records, church baptismal records and death records among other genealogical records. Please use this information with that caveat in mind so that nothing is assumed and no stones are left unturned to assure it's your family and the connection is accurate.
Analysis of Findings: I believe that I have found Edward and his family from 1881 to the 1901 census in Huddersfield England. The one glaring discrepancy is the given name of his spouse. It is listed as Mary age 37, born in Ireland in 1881, Bridget 50 born in County Mead, Ireland in 1891 and Brigdet 59 born in Ireland in 1901. Children noted in the three records and their places of birth tie the family together, but Mary is not a variation of Bridget. I couldn't find an obvious match in the Free BMD for the death of a Mary Brannan between 1881 and 1891 in Huddersfield. This family had a remarkable journey over a 30 year period! The number of Brennan/Brannan families in the Huddersfield Census jumped significantly between the 1871 and 1881 census and this isn't the first Brennan I have traced here whose origins were in Galway. There were only four names listed on the Huddersfield Free BMD marriages SEptember 1896 in Volume 9a, Page 732: Julia Ann Brennan, Tom Barker, Alice Haigh and Joe William Pashley. I believe Julia Ann married Joe William Pashley as they are in the same district as her parents in 1901 (7) and she is listed as a rug weaver as she was in 1891.
If you feel that you may be connected to this family, please contact me so that we can compare findings and possibly connect them to other Brennan (Brannan) families in Huddersfield.
