Gahagan (Geoghegan, Gaughan, Goaghan, Goghan) Families in Kiltimagh (Killedan) Roman Catholic Parish Records, County Mayo, Ireland

Kiltimagh Roman Catholic Parish is also referred to a Killedan Roman Catholic Parish. Killedan Civil Parish falls within Kiltimagh and Killedan Roman Catholic Parish. Kiltimagh borders Swinford Roman Catholic Parish in its southern tip. There were 42 Townlands in Killedan Civil Parish, County Mayo when the Griffith's Valuation was conducted in 1856. The Town of Kiltimagh was incorporated into three Townlands: Cordarragh, Gortgarve and Kiltimagh. The only Catholic Chapel in Kiltimagh Catholic Parish at that time was in Cordarragh in the Town of Kiltimagh.

Kiltimagh Roman Catholic Parish is covered on LDS microfilm number 1279231 and 926012. I am using microfilm 926012 to begin this compilation. It covers Marriages 1834-1880 and Baptisms 1860-1880. These two films are listed under the title: Parochial Registers of Killedan, 1834-1909. I will order the second film at a later date. There most likely is overlap between the two films, but 1279231 has later records (up until 1909) than 926012.

There were no Gahagans (or any variations of the surname) listed as occupiers of parcels, in Killedan Civil Parish when the Griffith's Valuation was conducted in 1856. This doesn't mean that they werent living there, only that they didn't have a parcel leased to a landlord that they paid rent to.

Regarding Surname O'Hagan: Jacobus O'Hagan married Maria Stanton November 19, 1843.

I have done my best to correctly transcribe these records, but after five or so hours behind a microfilm reader, the likelihood of mistakes in both interpretation and transcription most certainly increases. I have the microfilm and item numbers on which the records were found so you can confirm the information. Film 926012 was copied by the LDS Church in negative (black with white print), most likely due to the poor image quality of the film and poses additional deciphering challenges! I am also documenting all of the baptisms and marriages sponsored/witnessed by Brennans; although these are not included online, they can yield valuable clues such as "circles of friends" and possible townlands that might provide a missing link. There are additional details in these records such as date of birth, sponsors, priests, and at times notes in the margin detailing marriages and deaths. If you feel that your family is in this compilation, please contact me and I will share with you the additional details.
