The Gahagan (Goaghan, Geoghegan, Goghan, Gaughan etc) Surname in Crossmolina Roman Catholic Parish County Mayo, Ireland Records

The Crossmolina, County Mayo, Ireland Roman Catholic Parish Records are covered on LDS Microfilm Number 1279204 item 22. According to the LDS website, the film covers the following records: Baptisms 1831-1880 and Marriages 1832-1880. There are some early baptismal records in this film that are so pale, the script is nearly impossible to decipher. Its like reading tea leaves. If you feel you have Gahagans or a variant of this name in this parish and don't find them on my website, I would strongly suggest that you acquire the film yourself from a Local LDS Family History Center and double check that I didnt miss any as I can see this film will pose some challenges.

Crossmolina Roman Catholic Parish covers Crossmolina Civil Parish in Tirawley Barony in County Mayo, Ireland and was part of Ballina Poor Law Union. When the Griffith's Valuation was conducted in Crossmolina Civil Parish around 1856, Gaughans occupied parcels in the following Townlands: Coolnabinia, Gortnahurra Upper, Killeen, Knocklegan, Crossmolina (Town of Crossmolina) and Rathmore. Gaughan was the only variant of this surname that I found in the Griffith's Valuation for Crossmolina. I have only just begun this film and already am identifying many Gaughans in the early years of this film.

I have created a page listing the various Townlands in Crossmolina, the characteristics of the parish itself and one on the Gahagans who occupied parcels (and all surname variants) in Crossmolina that may be of help when going through the microfilm.

I have done my best to correctly transcribe these records, but after five or so hours behind a microfilm reader, the likelihood of mistakes in both interpretation and transcription most certainly increases. I have the microfilm and item number on which the records were found so you can confirm the information. In an attempt to minimize download times I have limited the information presented on each family. The records in this section will document Baptisms (B) and Marriages (M). I also have documented all of the baptisms and marriages sponsored/witnessed by Brennans; although these are not included online, they can yield valuable clues such as "circles of friends" and possible Townlands that might provide a missing link. There are additional details in these records such as date of birth, sponsors, priests, and at times notes in the margin detailing marriages and deaths. If you feel that your family is in this compilation, please feel free to contact me and I will share with you the additional details.
