Gahagan (and Goaghan, Geoghegan, Goghan, Gaughan) Families Identified in the Backs Roman Catholic Parish Records, County Mayo, Ireland (a parish that includes the Civil Parishes of Ballynahaglish and Kilbelfad)

Backs Roman Catholic Parish covers Ballynahaglish and Kilbelfad Civil Parishes in County Mayo, Ireland. There were only 41 Townlands in Ballynahaglish Civil Parish and 39 in Kilbelfad Civil Parish when the Griffith's Valuation was conducted in 1856. . Church records for this Catholic Parish are found on LDS microfilm number 1279205 on items 5-8 . The film covers marriages from roughly 1829-1880 with some gaps and baptisms from roughly 1830-1880. There were no Catholic Chapels noted in Kilbelfad Civil Parish and one in the townland of Knockmore in Ballynahaglish Civil Parish.

I have created specific webpages on the following topics that may be of interest to descendents whose ancestors hailed from either Ballynahaglish or Kilbelfad Civil Parishes in County Mayo: a page on the the Townlands of Ballynahaglish, the Characteristics of Ballynahaglish, a page on the Gahagans (only Gaughans) in Ballynahaglish Civil Parish Griffiths Valuation , a page on the Townlands of Kilbelfad, characteristics of Kilbelfad and one Gaughan in Kilbelfad Civil Parish Griffith's Valuation.

The surname variant Gaughan was present in the following Ballynahaglish Townlands when the Griffith's Valuation was conducted: Bellass, Carrowntrelia, Gortnadrehy, Lissaniska East and West, Rathbaun and Sraheen. The only Gaughan occupier of a parcel in the Griffith's Valuation for Kilbelfad was in Tawnaghmore.

I have done my best to correctly transcribe these records, but after five or so hours behind a microfilm reader, the likelihood of mistakes in both interpretation and transcription most certainly increases. I have the microfilm and item number on which the records were found so you can confirm the information. In an attempt to minimize download times I have limited the information presented on each family. The records in this section will document Baptisms (B) and Marriages (M). I also have documented all of the baptisms and marriages sponsored/witnessed by Gaughans; although these are not included online, they can yield valuable clues such as "circles of friends" and possible Townlands that might provide a missing link. There are additional details in these records such as date of birth, sponsors, priests, and at times notes in the margin detailing marriages and deaths. If you feel that your family is in this compilation, please feel free to contact me and I will share with you the additional details.

I am adding marriage records from 1829- 1848 at this time and will order this film later to review the rest.
