Gahagan (Goghan, Goaghan, Geoghegan, Gaughan) Surname in Louisburgh Roman Catholic Parish Records, County Mayo, Ireland

The Louisburgh Roman Catholic Parish Records are covered in two different microfilms: Microfilm Number 1279212 items 3 and 4 and Microfilm Number 926224 Items 1 and 2. Microfilm Number 1279212 is listed as covering the following according to the LDS website: "Baptisms, 1894-1919; marriages, 1844-1845 (copy); marriages, 1906-1922; baptisms, 1850-1872 (copy); baptisms, 1906-1922." I am currently working my way through item 3 of this film. Louisburgh Roman Catholic Parish was previously referred to as Kilgeever and includes part of Kilgeever Civil Parish in County Mayo. I will order Microfilm 926224 at some later date. I have a page specifically on the Townl of Louisburgh in my County Mayo Market Town section.

Summary of findings for Items 3 and 4 of Microfilm # 1279212: I identified eight Geoghegan Families in Items 3 and 4 of this Microfilm and nine different Geoghegan given names witnessing other surnames records. I didn't see any other variations of this Surname (such as Gahagan, Goghan, Goaghan or Gaughan) in this item. Some of the earlier original records of Item 4 are nearly impossible to read! There are Goggins in item 4. Though this is not a true variation of the Surname Gahagan, it is very similar, many surnames are spelled phonetically in the Irish Church Records, so I am including them in these records.

I have done my best to correctly transcribe these records, but after five or so hours behind a microfilm reader, the likelihood of mistakes in both interpretation and transcription most certainly increases. I have the microfilm and item numbers on which the records were found so you can confirm the information. In an attempt to minimize download times I have limited the information presented on each family. The records in this section will document Baptisms (B) and Marriages (M). I also have documented all of the baptisms and marriages sponsored/witnessed by Brennans; although these are not included online, they can yield valuable clues such as "circles of friends" and possible Townlands that might provide a missing link. There are additional details in these records such as date of birth, sponsors, priests, and at times notes in the margin detailing marriages and deaths. If you feel that your family is in this compilation, please feel free to contact me and I will share with you the additional details.

Kilgeever Family: David Geoghegan and Winifred Cain (and David Geoghegan and Mary Collins).
