Corcoran Families Hailing from Keenagh Beg, Crossmolina, County Mayo Ireland Documented in the England Census, Ireland Census, Passenger Lists, Griffith's Valuation, Tithe Applotment Books and a Variety of Other Resources

Keenagh Beg was a Townland of just over 1778 acres in the mid 19th century (this was reasonably large compared to the average Mayo Townland). When the Griffith's Valuation was conducted for Keenagh Beg in 1856, Sir W Roger Palmer, Bt was the Landlord for all but one parcel in Town. James Corcoran held two parcels and Dominick Corcoran had three parcels (See my Corcoran Griffith's compilation to see the other Corcorans in Crossmolina Civil Parish). This town was home to a corn mill and a Roman Catholic Chapel but little else of significance.

Keenagh Beg is located northwest of Cloonawillin and Crossmolina but still fairly centrally located in Crossmolina Civil Parish. Freeheen is the Townland separating the two Townlands (another site of Corcoran families in the Catholic microfilm). Maps created by the Derry Youth and Community Workshop refer to both Keenagh Beg and Keenagh More as Enagh Beg and More (I believe this is a typo as they are listed as Keenagh Beg and More elsewhere). Keenagh Beg is part of Ballina Union, Crossmolina District, Derry Electoral Division (DED). If you ever wish to search in the Cancelled Books from the Griffith's Valuation for Keenagh Beg at the Valuation Office in Dublin, the DED is what the Townland is recorded under. Regarding the database entitled "Irish Births and Baptisms 1620-1911": the births/baptisms are listed under the Registration District. Keenagh Beg is in Ballina Union (the Superintendents registrar's District of Ballina), in Crossmolina District, Derry Electoral Division. Keep in mind that civil registrations for births, marriages and deaths for Catholics in Ireland didn't begin until 1864. Before that time period, we are forced to rely on church baptismal and marriage records which in County Mayo weren't too consistent in most parishes until after about 1840 or even later. Births occurring in the 1820's, even the 1830's are challenging records to locate; you certainly need the luck of the Irish to find them.

There were several Corcoran families still living in the Townland of Keenagh Beg according to both the 1901 and 1911 Ireland Census. They will be added to the table on this page but included in the entries are Richard and Catherine Corcoran, Dominick and Sarah Corcoran, Patrick and Mary Corcoran and Sara Corcoran. They are all farmers.

Research observations: There was a New York Passenger list for the Ship Olympic that left Queenstown, Ireland and arrived in New York Ellis Island on April 19, 1913. On board was a single 20 yr old Richard Corcoran whose last residence was in Crossmolina. Could this be the son of Richard and Catherine Corcoran of Keenagh Beg in the 1901 and 1911 census for Keenagh Beg, Crossmolina, County Mayo? It is a possibility worth ruling out.

Thus far in the Crossmolina Catholic Church records I have found a James Barrett? and Mary Corcoran (1856) who appear to hail from Kenaugh (which may be Keenagh Beg or More). I am still working my way through this microfilm. There is a Johnnie Corcoran and Mary Timblin (1856) but they appear to be from Kenaugh M. (More?).
