Corcoran Families Hailing from the Townland and Town of Crossmolina, Crossmolina Civil Parish, County Mayo, Ireland Documented in the England Census, Ireland Census, Passenger Lists, Griffith's Valuation, Tithe Applotment Books and a Variety of Other Resources
Crossmolina was composed of just over 126 acres when the Griffith's Valuation was compiled for Crossmolina Civil Parish in 1856. According to this compilation, the Town of Crossmolina is incorporated as part of the following Townlands: Crossmolina, Cartrongilbert and Knockalegan. The Town of Crossmolina had a parcel for the Tolls and Customs of Markets and Fairs, a Petty Sessions Court House and a Roman Catholic Chapel (in Cartrongilbert), a Methodist Meeting House and Pound (in Crossmolina), and a Constabulary Barrack and Revenue Police Barrack (in Knockalegan). Multiple Landlords were represented in the Town of Crossmolina but Sir Roger Palmer H Bt had the highest concentration of parcels with 10 in Crossmolina, 16 in Cartrongilbert and 22 in Knockalegan. John Nolan and Thomas Daily also had sizable holdings in the Town of Crossmolina in Knockalegan with 10 and 17 respectively.
The Griffith's Valuation differentiates the Townland of Crossmolina from the Town of Crossmolina that is incorporated into three different Townlands. This is unlikely to be the case with other resources. When some immigrants give the census takers their birthplace as "Crofsmolina", they could be referring to the Town, the Townland or even the Civil Parish of Crossmolina. Running from West to East, the Townlands of Crossmolina, Cartrongilbert and Knockalegan are fairly centrally located in the Eastern part of Crossmolina Civil Parish.
This compilation will not include the Corcorans I have identified in the Crossmolina Catholic Parish Records. I have identified 15 different Corcoran Families in Microfilm 1279204: Lawrence/Mary Corcoran, Edward Daughes/Mary Corcoran, Catherine Corcoran/Lauren Dowdy, Jno Corcoran/Catherine Golden, Hannah Corcoran/John Hart, Patt Corcoran/Bridget Loftus, Pat Corcoran/Margaret McGown, Wm Corcoran/Barbara Mearsh, Judy Corcoran/Thomas Mulheran, Tom Corcoran/ Brid Walsh, Ml Corcoran/Catherine Walsh, Jane Corcoran/John H-son, Biddy Corcoran/ Martin F-mony? as well as a family on Reake Street (that I believe may be in the Town of Crossmolina) Honor Corcoran/James Forde. Crossmolina was referred to as Xmolina in most of the Catholic Church records.
This is a work in progress and will be added to over time as i find more records.
