Corcoran Families (and all surname variations) Identified in the 1861 Leeds Civil Parish, Leeds North Sub Registration District, Yorkshire, England and Research into their Irish Origins

Liverpool was the port of entry for the vast majority of the Irish that departed the Connaght Counties of Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo and Galway. Many Irish immigrants unable to find work in Liverpool were drawn to places like Manchester, Bradford and Leeds and their thriving textile and other industrial development in the mid 19th century.

Keep in mind that the connections I draw are what appear to me to be the same family and need to be further analyzed to make sure the conclusion is correct (hopefully with supporting evidence such as GRO marriage records and baptismal records). Please use this information with that caveat in mind so that nothing is assumed and no stones are left unturned to assure it's your family and the connection is accurate. The vast majority of earlier census records fail to give a place name of origin in Ireland.

Regarding Edward Corcoran, son of Edward and Catherine: It appears that Edward (25) was living with his mother (a widow) in the 1871 District 41 Census. He was a Cloth Dresser like his brother's Michael and John. In 1881 it appears that he was still a Cloth Dresser, age 25 living with the Rider family from Ireland in District 31. He may have died in Leeds in 1882 (Volume 9b, Page 265 Free BMD England).

Re: William and Bridget Corcoran on Hemingway Yard in District 5: William Corcoran appears to have married Bridget Flynn at the Parish Church in Leeds on February 2, 1857. William was a Laborer, the son of William Corcoran and Bridget was the daughter of Hugh Flynn. Mary Gaughan and Patrick Kearney were witnesses. I am unsure of what becomes of them after the 1861 census at this point.

Similar surnames worthy of mention: There was an Owen Corklin (age 15, Cloth Dresser) in District 33. There was a Jane Cockerham (49 yr old Charwoman from Wakefield with her two sons Henry (12) and William (11) from Leeds in District 45. There was also a Samuel Cockerham (38 yr old Brickmaker), his wife Mary (38) and their 6 kids from Leeds (Sarah, Lon, Amaside, Mary ,David and Samuel) in District 45. There was a John Cockerham (23 yr old Brick Moulder) who was born in Leeds, he is a brother in law living with the Marshall H Jackson Family who were also born in Leeds.

I am documenting specific details on the Irish born in Districts 1-20, 21-42, 43-55, 56-63 plus the Leeds Cavalry Barracks and District Moral and Industrial School for Pauper Children of the Leeds Civil Parish, and the Leeds Workhouse of Leeds North Sub-Registration District of the 1861 Census on separate pages to facilitate a shorter download time. This is a work in progress!
