Corcorans Documented as being Born in County Mayo, Ireland in the 1881 Yorkshire County, England Census Records
Documentation of the County of Birth in Ireland was fairly uncommon in the earlier years of the England Census records but was noted on occasion and increased after the 1851 census. This is a work in progress that I will add to over time.
These records are in no means complete. as I have not had time to go through the individual districts of Yorkshire at this point. I've noticed that on many occasions a Townland was given in these records (such as Castlebar, Ireland). This record would not show up on a search of Brennans born in Mayo, Ireland even though Castlebar is in County Mayo. I have also seen many individuals give their Roman Catholic Parish as a place of birth in Ireland. Athalone, a Catholic Parish in County Roscommon wouldn't show up in a search of those living in England born in County Roscommon either. These factors and the incorrect interpretation of the census taker's handwriting pose serious challenges to this search. Betsy Brannan was listed as being born in Ancommon, Ireland; however, a quick look at the record showed her place of birth clearly as Roscommon, Ireland. As I get time I will go through the districts of the England Counties that have the greatest concentrations of County Mayo born immigrants and add to these records.
Regarding the James and Julia Corcoran Family, Nether Hallam, District 35: I have not included this family because although Julia (88) is documented as being born in County Mayo, her husband, James (72) and his sister Mary (80) were from Dublin. I think it is unlikely that her maiden name is Corcoran.
Regarding the John and Mary Corcoran Family, Leeds Civil Parish, North Leeds Sub registration district, District 30: I believe that I may have found this family in the 1871 Leeds, North Leeds, District 31 (on the same street, new district). John Corcoran 35 general laborer and wife Mary 40 from Ireland, daughters Mary 20 rag sorter, Catherine 10 tobacco mill, Elizabeth 11, tobacco mill, Winey 9 scholar, Julia 7 scholar, and Margaret 5 scholar all born in Yorkshire Leeds. They also had a son Thoms 15 who worked at the woolen chit mill born in Yorkshire Leeds. There is a John Corcoran 35 Lab, Mary his wife 32 (both born in Ireland), Mary A 11, Ellen 9, Thomas 6, Catherine 4, Bridget 2 all born in Yorkshire Leeds in the 1861 Leeds, North Leeds Sub registrations district, Distrcit 32 on 2 Line Ford that may also be a match though there are some discrepancies.
Regarding the Mary Corcoran Family in Leeds Civil Parish, District 1: I believe I might have found her family in the 1861 England Census, Leeds Civil Parish, District one at 9 Cherry Tree Yard: Patrick Corcoran Head age 40 Linen Yarn Packer; Mary his wife 32 (both were born in Ireland), Mary, daughter 14 mule hand, Catherine, Daughter 10 Scholar, Sarah daugter 8 scholar, Patrick son 5 scholar and Ann daughter 2 scholar. All of the children were born in Leeds Yorkshire England and it appears to be the same street. There are some inconsistencies as well: the oldest daughter Mary is not in this record, Catherine, Patrick and Ann appear to match up but the Sarah in the 1881 census wouldn't have been born yet. The same family appears at 9 Cherry Tree Yard in the 1871 Leeds Civil Parish, District 1 census: Patrick Corcoran 56 flax dresser married to Mary 60 (both born in Ireland), Daughters Cathrine 19 flax dresser, Annie 12 scholar, Ellen 9 scholar, Sarah 6, and son Patsey 16 cloth dresser. All children were born in Yorkshire Leeds. John Henley 4, grandson is also living with them. I didn't see this family listed in district 1a of Cherry Tree Lane in the 1851 Leeds Civil Parish census.
Regarding the Richard and Catherine Corcoran Family, Leeds Civil Parish, North Leeds, District 36: I identified two other possible census records that might be this family (both were in Leeds Civil Parish, North Leeds Sub registration district): In the 1871 census in District 34 on See's Square there was a Richard Corcoran 40 laborer, wife Catherine 40 both born in Ireland, daughter Mary 15 a mill hand, Ann 6, Michael 3 and Winifred Richard's sister 30 a servant living with them. All of the children were born in Yorkshire, Leeds. If it is then what became of the children? In the 1861 census in District 27 there was a Richard Corcoran 32 green grocer laborer 32, wife Catherine 29 both born in Ireland, daughter Mary 6 born in Yorkshire, Leeds on York Street. These might be only remote possiblities but worth a look.
Regarding the Thomas and Alice Corcoran Family in Leeds Civil Parish, North Leeds, District 33: I believe I have found this family in the same civil parish but in District 43 on 4 Tunstall Fold with Thomas 26 a cloth finisher from Ireland, wife Alice 26 from Yorkshire, Leeds, James 2 and Mary A 4 months both born in Yorkshire Leeds.
