Corcorans Documented as being Born in County Roscommon, Ireland in the 1881 Lancashire County, England Census Records

Documentation of the County of Birth in Ireland was fairly uncommon in the earlier years of the England Census records but was noted on occasion and increased after the 1851 census. This is a work in progress that I will add to over time.

These records are in no means complete. as I have not had time to go through the individual districts of Lancashire at this point. I've noticed that on many occasions a Townland was given in these records (such as Castlebar, Ireland). This record would not show up on a search of Brennans born in Mayo, Ireland even though Castlebar is in County Mayo. I have also seen many individuals give their Roman Catholic Parish as a place of birth in Ireland. Athalone, a Catholic Parish in County Roscommon wouldn't show up in a search of those living in England born in County Roscommon either. These factors and the incorrect interpretation of the census taker's handwriting pose serious challenges to this search. Betsy Brannan was listed as being born in Ancommon, Ireland; however, a quick look at the record showed her place of birth clearly as Roscommon, Ireland. As I get time I will go through the districts of the England Counties that have the greatest concentrations of County Mayo born immigrants and add to these records.

Regarding Dominic Corcoran Fmaily in Ashton in Makerfield, District 9: I believe I may have found this family in the 1891 England census in Ashton Civil Parish, District 10 of Lancashire County. Jane Corcoran 49 a widow is listed as head, Mary, 14, Ann, 12, Jane, 8, Frances 5, Margaret and Ann Farrel nieces are living with them. If this is accurate Dominic died sometime after the 1881 census (possibly around or after Frances was born in 1886). In this record Jane is listed as being born in Ashton in Makerfield as noted above in 1881;however, she is listed as a Domestic not a Milliner here.

Special Note: A genealogist originally from Wigan, England has found a most amazing tombstone for Dominic Corcoran in Ashton in Makerfield, England. Dominie Corcoran is listed as having died March 26, 1885 at the age of 40 and his wife Jane died September 11, 1909 at the age of 67. Kudos to her for her great find!

Regarding John Corcoran Family in Liverpool Civil Parish, District4: I believe I have found this family in the 1871 Lancashire, Liverpool Civil Parish, District 56 Census with John 44, wife Winifred 39, John 14, Mary Jane 12, Winifred 7, Ann 5 and Thomas 2. They are however all listed as being born in Ireland ( I think this is probably an error with both parents being from Roscommon Ireland and the children born in Liverpool.

Regarding Patrick Corcoran Family in Hulme Civil Parish, District 4: I believe I have found this family in the 1871 Lancashire, Chorlton on Medlock Civil Parish, District 30 census with Patrick 60, wife Julia 43, Mary Ann 21, John 19, James 17, Thomas 15, Patrick 11, Daniel 9, David 7 and Edward 3. Both parents are listed as being born in Ireland in this record and children in Manchester, Lancashire. I think I may also have found them in the 1851 census in Hulme Civil Parish, District 2ap where Patrick Corcoran is listed as a son in law (living with Eleanor Higgins family) 23, wife Julia 28, Thomas grandson 1 month born in Hulme Lancashire.
