Corcoran Families from the Townland of Ballaghaderreen, Kilcolman Civil Parish, County Roscommon, Ireland in Church, Census and Other Records
The Townland of Ballaghaderreen was transferred from County Mayo to County Roscommon, Ireland via a Local Government Act in 1898. Ballaghaderreen was one of 28 different Townlands transferred from Kilcolman Civil Parish in this act. I have found 10 different Corcoran Families that describe Ballaghaderreen as their residence in the records of the Ballaghaderreen Catholic Parish microfilm. I have documented over 280 records in this film that involve either a Corcoran family member, Corcoran Baptismal Sponsor or witness at a wedding; unfortunately, many of them do not give a place of residence. There were two Corcoran families in the 1901 Ballaghaderreen, Ireland Census, one family with Ballaghaderreen records in the 1901 and 1911 Lomcloon, County Sligo, Ireland Census and five in the 1911 Ballaghaderreen Census.
Corcorans were not listed as occupiers in Ballaghaderreen, County Mayo Ireland when the Griffith's Valuation was conducted in 1857. This does not mean that they weren't here, only that they weren't on record as occupying a parcel with a landlord.
The following Corcorans sponsored baptisms in records that identified Ballaghaderreen as a place of residence:
- Maria Corcoran sponsored the baptism of John, son of Peter Morrissroe and Mary Carty April 1899.
- Patricius Corcoran sponsored the baptism of Patricius, son of Dominiscus Farrell and Catharine Cunnane February 1860.
- Ellen Corcoran sponsored the baptism of Pat, son of Thomas Mahon and Lizzie Cunniff in September 1900.
- J Corcoran sponsored the baptism of Mary, Daughter of John and Mary Daly in September 1904.
- Maggie Corcoran sponsored the baptism of Anna and Jane, Daughters of Francis Sharky and Kate Fahy in April 1866.
- Thomas Corcoran and Mary Corcoran sponsored the baptism of Thomas, son of William Clarke and Kate Gordon in December 1884.
- Patrick Corcoran sponsored the baptism of Francis son of Phillip Mannion and Winifred Lavin in May 1865.
- Michael Corcoran and Mary Brennan sponsored the baptism of Ellen, daughter of Charlie Ward and Mary McDonough in July 1910.
- William Corcoran sponsored the baptism of Winifred, Daughter of Edward Kelly and B Neary in October 1891.
- Pat Corcoran sponsored the baptism of Edward, son of Edward Kelly and Bridget J Neary in October 1888.
- Pat Corcoran sponsored the baptism of Bridgt, daughter of Edward Solan and Annie Quinn in January 1898.
- Pat Corcoran sponsored the baptism of Mary Agnes, daughter of Edward Solan and Annie Quinn in February 1901.
- Honour Corcoran sponsored the baptism of Michael, daughter of John Mahon and Kate Richardson in May 1894.
There were numerous Corcoran marriage records in which Cathedral Ballaghaderreen was given as the marriage location; these were not included because residence in Ballaghaderreen was not noted.
Regarding the Townland of Lomcloon, Sroove and Islands: Thomas Corcoran and Mary Mulligan who are listed in the compilation below appear to be residents of Lomcloon for the majority of their children's births. Lomcloon is a County Sligo Townland a little less than 10 km northeast of Ballaghaderreen. It is part of Killaraght DED (Electoral Division). Both Thomas and Mary appear to have been born in County Sligo in Sroove and Islands respectively. Sroove is just over 4 km north west of Lomcloon. I have seen Islands referenced repeatedly in the Ballaghaderreen film. In later records it appears to be associated with the Monasterredan area, another Townland in County Sligo that is 1.8 km southeast of Sroove.
