The Patrick Corcoran and Alice Gaunt Family of Newton in Makerfield, Lancashire, England: An Analysis of Patrick's origins in Cloonfad, Roscommon, Ireland, His Marriage to Wife Alice Gaunt in Wolstanton, Staffordshire, England and Their Family's Migration between Wolstanton, Ashton in Makerfield, Lancashire and Newton in Makerfield, Lancashire, England
Patrick Corcoran of Cloonfad, Roscommon, Ireland, appears to have married Alice Gaunt of Cheshire in Wolstanton, the quarter ending June 1872. Cloonfad is a Townland in five different Civil Parishes in County Roscommon: Termonbarry, Tumna, Kilkeevin, Tibohine and Moore. I have identified all of the Corcoran families from the Tibohine microfilm. I didn't see any Patrick Corcorans (born 1847,1848) or Thomas his brother born about 1854 in the Loughglynn (Tibohine) film I looked at. The Kilkeevin (Castlerea) Microfilm unfortunately is only available for viewing in Ireland. I have spent some time looking at that film there but only had time to skim the surface. At this point, I am unsure of which Cloonfad that Patrick Corcoran hailed from. All that is clear is that he married Alice Gaunt and had children Ellen, John, Mary, Thomas, Patrick, Terence, James, Joseph, Peter, WInifred and William and he had a 47 yr old unmarried brother Thomas who was living with them on Clarence Street in Newton in Makerfield during the 1901 England Census. Of note, a boarder Thomas Gara from Tibohine, Roscommon was living with them during the 1911 census in Newton in Makerfield.
Regarding Alice Gaunt: I believe she was living with her parents John and Eliza Gaunt on Birth Street in Tunstall Staffordshire (Wolstanton Registration District 17) with her two siblings Selina and John when the 1871 Census was conducted. There was a 20 yr old Edward Corcoran living next door.
My objective in this research is to analyze the Corcoran Families who may have migrated from parishes along the Roscommon/Mayo border (my family's likely origins). There appears to be common migration trails that were followed from the Mayo/Roscommon border area to certain parishes in Lancashire, Staffordshire and Yorkshire England. I am analyzing Corcoran families in the England Census records and hope to eventually connect them to the Corcorans that I am identifying in the Catholic Church Records in both County Mayo and County Roscommon Ireland. Hopefully I will find my Corcoran connections in the process! This will most definitely be a work in progress and all findings I speculate on would have to be proven for accuracy with GRO of England marriage records, church baptismal records and death records among other genealogical records. Please use this information with that caveat in mind so that nothing is assumed and no stones are left unturned to assure it's your family and the connection is accurate.
I welcome any and all feedback, corrections- they benefit us all. If you believe that your ancestors might be related to this family please contact me!
