Corcorans in Newport Roman Catholic Church Records, County Mayo, Ireland
I have completed Microfilm number 1279207, items 9-11 for Newport Roman Catholic Parish. Burrishoole Civil Parish is part of Newport Roman Catholic Parish and Burrishoole Barony.
There were only three Corcoran Families that I was able to identify in this parish register that unfortunately, did not begin until 1872. I will present them alphabetically by the Corcoran Spouse's Surname.
Regarding the Surname Gibbons: Michael is the son of Richard Corcoran and Marie Geraghty of Slinaun (this is in Kilmaclasser Civil Parish to the South) and Celia is the daughter of Jacobi Gibbons and Cath Neally of Rosclave (in Burrishoole Civil Parish). They were either married in 1889 or 1990, the record was not clear. As a side note, when the Griffith's Valuation was conducted in 1855 for Kilmaclasser Civil Parish, there were many Corcorans documented in the Townland of Slinaunroe (one of whom was a Richard) and one in the Townland of Derryribbeen.
Catherina Corcoran sponsored the baptism of Brigida Cleary, daughter of Joannes Cleary and Maria Kilroy from Lettermaghera on 9/22/1877 and a Brigida Corcoran sponsored the Baptism of Maria Duffy, daughter of Martin Duffy and Julia Cleary of Kilmore on April 2, 1878. I couldn't find a Townland by the name of Kilmore in Burrishoole Civil Parish, but there is one in the Civil Parishes of Kilmovee and Toomore (these are no where near Burrishoole Civil Parish.)
There was one barely legible record that appeared to be a Martinus Corcoran acting as a witness in a marriage in Ballytigue? December 9, 1887.
On April 1, 1904, Maria Hookes, Daughter of Michaelus Hooks and Mariam Corcoran, married Patricius Moran of the Townland of Deradda. Maria Hookes is listed as living in Derrykill. This record was really difficult to read, but I believe her mother was Mariam Corcoran.
In the 1905 Newport Roman Catholic Church records there is a John J Corcoran listed as a parish priest.
As a side note, the only Corcoran documented in Burrishoole Civil Parish when the Griffith's Valuation was conducted earlier in 1855 was Martin Corcoran in the Townland of Sandhill.
