Coffey (Coffy, Coffee etc) Families in Bekan Roman Catholic Parish Records, County Mayo, Ireland

The Coffey (Coffee, Coffy etc) Families I have identified in this Civil Parish are presented under the spouse's surname. If I have been unable to identify the name of the spouse that married a Coffey for one reason or another I will place those records in the "unknown" section of this directory. I completed the available microfilm (1279209) on this Roman Catholic Parish back in 2011 before I realized that Michael Brannan and Biddy Coffee were my third great grandparents so I will have to go back and revisit this film; however, in the mean time, I am going to document the Coffey records that I have inadvertantly captured in documenting my other surnames. Remember this will be an incomplete compilation from this film! Some priests in these records refer to the wife's maiden name by the word olim (Latin for previously), and sometimes they refer to both husband and wife by the same surname without a maiden name listed. They may have married someone with the same surname or it could have been left out in error, there is no way to tell without further records. If both spouses were listed as Coffeys, I will present that info under the spouse's surname of A-C until I have further clarification.

I have been in contact with John Robbins, a Genealogist from England, who is a descendent of Michael Coffey and Margaret Grogan whose daughter Catherine was born in Bekan in 1855 and married Thomas McGuire of Castlerea, Roscommon. Please contact us if you feel that your Coffeys may be from the Bekan or the Mayo/Roscommon border area so that we can see how our Coffey ancestors might all be linked. The Coffey surname is not all that common in Mayo, more prevalent in Roscommon. This infrequency might give us all a better chance of seeing how we are connected if we have all the puzzle pieces to work with!

I have done my best to correctly transcribe these records, but after five or so hours behind a microfilm reader, the likelihood of mistakes in both interpretation and transcription most certainly increases. I have the microfilm and item numbers on which the records were found so you can confirm the information. In an attempt to minimize download times I have limited the information presented on each family. The records in this section will document Baptisms (B) and Marriages (M). If you feel that your family is documented in these pages and would like further details, please feel free to contact me.
