Charles Fort, a Star-shaped Fort above Kinsale Harbor in County Cork, one of the Largest, Most Well-Preserved Military Fortresses in Ireland

Charles Fort, a star shaped fort, was built in the late 17th century to protect the entrance to Kinsale Harbor from invaders by sea. Garrisons of troops were based here until the Irish Free State was established in 1921. The setting for Charles Fort with its 40-foot high walls, five bastions, military buildings and grounds is quite impressive as is the view. A one-mile trail that runs along the outside of the fort to the Harbor mouth is an added bonus.
