Brennan Families Hailing from the Townland of Tullynahoo, Kilconduff Civil Parish, County Mayo, Ireland: An Analysis of their Migration Trails from Ireland to England and to the U.S. documented in Ireland and England Catholic Church Records, the Griffith's Valuation, England and US Census and other Records
Ballynahoo was a Townland of just over 743 acres in Kilconduff Civil Parish, County Mayo when the Griffith's Valuation was conducted in 1856. All of the parcels in Ballynahoo were leased from Captain H Brabazon at the time; all of which was land and an assortment of bog, mountainous and water parcels. Their were no Brennans paying rent to Captain Brabazon at the time of the valuation in Tullynahoo.
I have identified at least 7 different families in the Swinford Catholic Parish Church Microfilm that include a Brennan husband or wife: Patrick Brennan and Anne Garvey, Jacobus Branan and Maria Gavan, Kitty (Catharina) Brennan and Pat Gavan, Pat Brennan and Bridget Dempsey, Jacobus Brennan and Maria Brenan (who could be Gavan above), Mary Brennan and Thomas Costello and Maria Brenan and Joannes Graffarty. The online EPPI (Enhanced British Parliamentary Papers on Ireland) showing cases before the Land Commission in Ireland indicate that on June 26, 1900 two Grafferty's (Michael and Patrick) and Michael Gavan held land leased through Captain Brabazon in Tullynahoo. Neither of these appear to be married to Brennans but are likely related to the marriages listed above. I didn't see any Brennans listed for Tullynahoo in this time frame in this compilation.
When the 1901 Ireland Census was taken, the following three Brennan families were living in Tullynahoo, Brackloon DED, Mayo: Pat(63) and Anne (50) Brennan and children John 17, Thomas 15, Sarah 12, Lizie 10 and Maggie 6 living in house 1, Mary Brennan (60 a widow), with children John 40, James 26 and Mary 22 living in House 8 and Pat Brennan (34) with wife Bridget (26) with two sons James (2) and Patrick in House 9.
When the 1911 Ireland Census was taken the following two Brennan families and one Costello family with Mary Brennan Mother in Law who were living in Tullynahoo, Brackloon DED, Mayo: Annie Brennan (78 widowed farmer) with unmarried children John (30), Lizzie (18) and Maggie (16) in House 39, Bridget Brennan (37, married 14 years with 5 children, 5 living) with children James 12, Patrick 10, Mary 9, Thomas 7 and Bridget 1 in House 6 and in House 8 Thomas Costello (30 Farmer) his wife Mary (Brennan) Costello (30), children Patrick (6), James (2), Thomas (1) and widowed mother in law Mary Brennan (75).
The Patrick Brennan and Anne Garvey Family of Tullynahoo: The baptismal records in the Swinford Microfilm for Thomas, Elizabeth and Margaret Agnes look to be lined up with the ages of the Pat and Anne Brennan family in Tullynahoo House 1 in the 1901 Ireland Census.
This will most definitely be a work in progress and all findings I speculate on would have to be proven for accuracy with marriage, church baptismal, death and other genealogical records. Please use this information with that caveat in mind so that nothing is assumed and no stones are left unturned to assure it's your family and the connection is accurate. I would love to hear from anyone who believes their Brennan ancestors came from the area around Swinford, Mayo and would value any feedback and suggestions to this page.
