County Roscommon Brennans in Pigot's Commercial Directory of Ireland, 1824

The following information was acquired from the CD book Pigot's Commercial Directory of Ireland, 1824. It is part of the Trinity college of Dublin Library Collection. This CD ROM is available through Archive CD Books Ireland and is part of their Archive CD Books Project. This CD Book describes its contents as follows:

"Pigot and Companies City of Dublin and Hibernian Provincial Directory of the Nobility, Gentry, Clergy, Professional Gentlemen, Merchants and Manufacturers of Dublin and upwards of 120 of the Principal Cities, Seaports and Towns of Ireland."

The Towns in County Roscommon that are covered in this Book CD are Boyle, Castlerea, Elphin and Roscommon.

Of interest is the fact that Carrick-on Shannon is listed in this directory as being part of County Leitrim, but when Slater's National Commercial Directory was published in 1846 it was listed as being partly under Leitrim and partly under Roscommon. As there is a Brennan listed in Carrick-on-Shannon, County Leitrim I will list it in this section with that caveat in mind.

The Townland of Ballinasloe was also covered on this CD book. Ballinasloe was listed as being part of County Galway in this 1824 Directory, but in the 1846 Slater's Directory it states that Ballinasloe was partly in Creagh Civil Parish (County Roscommon) but mostly in Kilcloony Civil Parish (County Galway). This particular CD only covered the Connaught Province of Ireland.

There were no individuals with the Surname Brennan listed in any of the County Roscommon Towns of Boyle, Castlerea, Elphin or Roscommon, but there was a Brennan in Carrick-on-Shannon (a Townland that was listed as being partly in County Roscommon later in the the 1846 directory) and there was a Brennan in the Townland of Ballinasloe (a Townland that in 1846 was considered partly in County Roscommon and partly in County Galway). These two Brennans are listed below.

An interesting observation for my Irish family tree research was that a Thomas Cochrane that made Farming implements in Ballinasloe (Co Galway) in the Pigot Directory in 1824 was listed in the 1846 Directory in Ballinasloe (Co Roscommon/Co Galway) as the Proprietor of a Coach Factory- Farming Society Bldg

Name Town/Street Job Description or Title
Brennan, Peter Carrick-on- Shannon Cartwright (Listed under Shopkeeper/Traders) (keep in mind that this Townland is listed as being part of County Leitrim in this directory but part of County Roscommon and County Leitrim in the 1846 Slater's National Commercial Directory of Ireland).
Brennan, Michael Main Street, Ballinasloe Cabinet Maker (Keep in mind that this Townland is listed as being part of Co Galway in this 1824 directory, but in 1846 it was listed as being partly in County Roscommon and partly in County Galway)
