Brennan Families (and all surname variations) Identified in the 1851 Leeds Civil Parish, South Sub Registration District, Yorkshire, England and Research into their Irish Origins

Liverpool was the port of entry for the vast majority of the Irish that departed the Connaght Counties of Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo and Galway. Many Irish immigrants unable to find work in Liverpool were drawn to places like Manchester, Bradford and Leeds and their thriving textile and other industrial development in the mid 19th century.

Keep in mind that the connections I draw are what appear to me to be the same family and need to be further analyzed to make sure the conclusion is correct (hopefully with supporting evidence such as GRO marriage records and baptismal records). Please use this information with that caveat in mind so that nothing is assumed and no stones are left unturned to assure it's your family and the connection is accurate. The vast majority of earlier census records fail to give a place name of origin in Ireland.

Phonetically similar surnames deserving notation: There was a George Brammen, a Sawyer born in Durham Barnard Castle whose wife Mary was born in Dublin, Ireland, son William and daughter Hannah in Leeds in District 1g on Waterloo Street. There was a Mary Brannam (Widow), Daughter Mary (Carder of Flax) and son Thomas on Brighton Court in District 3d. There were two different Branham families in District 3T, John Branham and George Branham were both farmers born in Yorkshire and head of their respective families.

Research Observations: It appears that Thomas Brannan and Anne Walsh hail from County Sligo, Ireland (according to the 1861 Leeds, North Leeds Census), and I believe I have found members of their familiy in the 1851-1871 census records; however, there are some discrepancies so I have yet to put this families page on line.

I have documented specific details on the Irish-born in Districts 1a-2e and 3a-3z of the Leeds Civil Parish, South Sub Registration District on separate pages to reduce download time.

Regarding the Thomas Brannan and Ann Walsh Family: I have yet to find the marriage record anywhere in Yorkshire for this family. They may have been married in Ireland or elsewhere, that remains to be seen. There is a free bmd England Birth record for a Thomas Brennan quarter ending September 1850 in Leeds that may or may not be their son Thomas. There are 4 Thomas Brennans/Brannans that died between 1851 and 1862 in Leeds, Yorkshire: a Thomas Brannen that died quarter ending September 1851, Thomas Brennan that died quarter ending June 1852, Thomas Brennan that died quarter ending March 1853 and Thomas Brennan that died quarter ending September 1860 though I can't be sure any of them are their son Thomas as no parents names are given on the free bmd just possibly on the GRO record. I believe this family is living on #4 Brooks Street as listed below in 1851 and then on 4 Helen's Court in 1861 in which Thomas and wife Ann are listed as being born in County Sligo, Ireland with daughter Ann 7 born in Leeds and visitor Michael Brannan 45 (also born in Sligo) is living with them. In 1871 they are in district 35 living at 9 Helen's Court with Thomas 57 married brick layer's laborer with son Michael 32 Cabinet Maker born in Ireland and Daughter Ann 17 born in Leeds. The 1901 Ireland census for Leeds appears to show Michael Brannan (his son) then 62 a widowed Cabinet Maker born in Sligo, Ireland, living in district 16 in West Leeds.
