Brennan Families (and all surname variations) Identified in the 1861 Leeds Civil Parish, Leeds North Sub Registration District, Yorkshire, England and Research into their Irish Origins

Liverpool was the port of entry for the vast majority of the Irish that departed the Connaght Counties of Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo and Galway. Many Irish immigrants unable to find work in Liverpool were drawn to places like Manchester, Bradford and Leeds and their thriving textile and other industrial development in the mid 19th century.

Keep in mind that the connections I draw are what appear to me to be the same family and need to be further analyzed to make sure the conclusion is correct (hopefully with supporting evidence such as GRO marriage records and baptismal records). Please use this information with that caveat in mind so that nothing is assumed and no stones are left unturned to assure it's your family and the connection is accurate. The vast majority of earlier census records fail to give a place name of origin in Ireland.

Regarding Elizabeth (Robinson) Brennan in District 8: Elizabeth Robinson, daughter of Thomas Robinson (Cordwainer) married James Branan (Commercial Traveler) in The Parish Church, Leeds on September 4, 1851. (West Yorkshire England Marriages page 510 of 760 ancestry.com). There was a Free BMD death record for a Jame Brannan from the quarter ending June 1852 in Leeds (Volume 9b, Page 252).

Regarding the Owen Brennan and Margaret Roach Family of Leeds, Yorkshire, England: Owen Brennan 47, Laborer and widowed son of John Brennan Laborer married Margaret Roach 37 a widow and daughter of Richard Gavin, Laborer on June 7, 1853 Parish Church, Leeds, Yorkshire, England. I believe that Owen was lving in Leeds North Leeds in District 1b in 1851 on 18 Back York Street. He was listed as 50, gathers rags and bones, born in Ireland. Son Michael 16 Laborer and son Owen 10 were both born in Leeds. Of interest, I believe that Owen was listed as living at Back York Street when he was married in 1853. In 1861, he is living in District 2, 12 Goulden's Square, while a Michael Brennan Family (possibly a brother) is listed as living on 18 Back York Street in the same district. I did not find this family in the 1871 Leeds Census thus far. There was an Owen Brannon born 1803 who died in Leeds, Quarter ending June 1874 at the age of 71 that could possibly be him.

I am documenting specific details on the Irish born in Districts 1-20, 21-42, 43-60, the Leeds Cavalry Barracks and District Moral and Industrial School for Pauper Children of the Leeds Civil Parish, Leeds North Sub-Registration District of the 1861 Census on separate pages to facilitate a shorter download time. This is a work in progress!
