Brennans (Brannans) Documented as Being Born in County Roscommon, Ireland in the 1871 Lancashire County England Census
Documentation of the County of Birth in Ireland was fairly uncommon in the earlier years of the England Census records but was noted on occasion and increased after the 1851 census. This is a work in progress that I will add to over time.
These records are in no means complete. as I have not had time to go through the individual districts of Lancashire County at this point. I've noticed that on many occasions a Townland was given in these records (such as Castlebar, Ireland). This record would not show up on a search of Brennans born in Mayo, Ireland even though Castlebar is in County Mayo. I have also seen many individuals give their Roman Catholic Parish as a place of birth in Ireland. Athalone, a Catholic Parish in County Roscommon wouldn't show up in a search of those living in England born in County Roscommon either. These factors and the incorrect interpretation of the census taker's handwriting pose serious challenges to this search. Betsy Brannan was listed as being born in Ancommon, Ireland; however, a quick look at the record showed her place of birth clearly as Roscommon, Ireland. As I get time I will go through the districts of the England Counties that have the greatest concentrations of County Mayo born immigrants and add to these records.
Regarding Michael Brennan, Boarder in Newton Civil Parish, District 10: Michael is listed as being born in Redhill Ireland. There is a Redhill in both Annagh Civil Parish in Costello Barony and in Templemore Civil Parish in Gallen Barony, County Mayo. I have not included him in this compilation because there is also a Redhill in Ireland Counties Cavan, Kildare and Queens. He is living as a border with the Softhouse family from County Mayo which could make his Mayo birth more likely.
Regarding Michael Brennan and Patrick Brennan at 92 Bradshaw Gate in Great Bolton Civil Parish, District 24: They are listed immediately after Catherine Brennan (Roscommon) as lodgers with the Scully family. They are listed as being from Heath? Ireland (does not appear to be Meath). There is a Heath in Carlow, Kildare, Kings County, Queens County, County Mayo in Crossboyne Civil Parish as well as a Heathfield in Roscommon. Due to the numerous possibilities I have not included them in this compilation.
Regarding Maria Brennen who was in the Lancashire, Toxteth Park Civil Parish, District 61 census: Maria Brennan was listed as being born in Hollymount, Ireland. There is a Hollymount in County Roscommon in Ardcarn Civil Parish, Boyle Barony. I have not included this record because Hollymount was also a significant market town in the mid 19th Century in Kilcommon Civil Parish, Kilmaine Barony in County Mayo. This placename was also present in Counties Galway, Meath, Down, Fermanagh and Queens. Maria Brennan was listed as a mother in law to Henry Roberts; his wife Jemima C was born in Caerfially?, Glamorgan Wales.
I have highlighted the first name in each residence whether it be a head of household, lodger or inmate to help differentiate the groupings.
