The Brennan Surname in Crossmolina Roman Catholic Parish County Mayo, Ireland Records

The Crossmolina, County Mayo, Ireland Roman Catholic Parish Records are covered on LDS Microfilm Number 1279204 item 22. According to the LDS website, the film covers the following records: Baptisms 1831-1880 and Marriages 1832-1880. There are some early baptismal records in this film that are so pale, the script is nearly impossible to decipher. Its like reading tea leaves. If you feel you have Corcorans in this parish and don't find them on my website, I would strongly suggest that you acquire the film yourself from a Local LDS Family History Center and double check that I didnt miss any as I can see this film will pose some challenges.

Crossmolina Roman Catholic Parish covers Crossmolina Civil Parish in Tirawley Barony in County Mayo, Ireland and was part of Ballina Poor Law Union. When the Griffith's Valuation was conducted in Crossmolina Civil Parish around 1856, there were no Brennans listed as occupiers of parcels .

On a trip to Ireland in 2012, I dropped into the "Corcoran" Store in Crossmolina while I was in County Mayo. The lady in the store verbalized recollection of some of her Corcoran ancestors having journeyed to Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England like mine did during the famine. My second great grandparents Martin Brennan and Catherine Corcoran as well as their daughter Mary and her mother Mary were living in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England when the 1851 Census was conducted. I am trying to determine if some of these Crossmolina Corcorans may have shared this common migration trail to Yorkshire, England or perhaps beyond like mine did. I would love to hear from anyone with Corcoran or Brennan ancestors from this catholic parish or the surrounding area in Mayo.

I have created a page listing the various Townlands in Crossmolina, the characteristics of the parish itself that may be of help when going through the microfilm.

I have done my best to correctly transcribe these records, but after five or so hours behind a microfilm reader, the likelihood of mistakes in both interpretation and transcription most certainly increases. I have the microfilm and item number on which the records were found so you can confirm the information. In an attempt to minimize download times I have limited the information presented on each family. The records in this section will document Baptisms (B) and Marriages (M). I also have documented all of the baptisms and marriages sponsored/witnessed by Brennans; although these are not included online, they can yield valuable clues such as "circles of friends" and possible Townlands that might provide a missing link. There are additional details in these records such as date of birth, sponsors, priests, and at times notes in the margin detailing marriages and deaths. If you feel that your family is in this compilation, please feel free to contact me and I will share with you the additional details.

This is a work in progress!

My gut feeling is that there will be very few Brennan families in the Crossmolina Catholic Parish records; therefore, at this point I will just note them on this page in order by date.

  1. October 16, 1831 Birth and October 5, 1831 Baptism of Anthony, son of Patrick Banks and what appears to be Catherine Brennan. The record is hard to transcribe and I am less than certain of its accuracy.
  2. January 17, 1834 Birth and January 18, 1834 Baptism of Anthony, son of Pat Brannane or Brabazon or ? and Cethy Gill (Rathmore).
  3. September 26, 1875 the Baptism of Michl to Pat Walsh and Anna Brennan with sponsors John Boland and Bridget McNulty (C Cloghy).
  4. February 26, 1833 Marriage of James Brennan to Margaret Fenagan with James Joice Witness (Mullenmore).
  5. A James Brennan is a witness at the wedding of An'y Barlow and Mary Nelson (4 Keel is mentioned as the townland) on June 2, 1834.
  6. Anthony Ruane married Bridget Brenan on ? 3, 1834 (records before were from June) Xmolina (likely townland of Crossmolina) with Patt Holeran and Bridget McHale Witnesses.
