The Brennan Families of Creggan, Kilcolman Civil Parish, County Roscommon Ireland found in Ballaghaderreen Catholic Parish, Census and other Records

The Townland of Creggan was part of County Mayo until it was transferred to County Roscommon in 1898 in a Local Government Act. The River Lung runs through this town according to the Griffith's Valuation conducted in 1857. I have identified 11 different Brennan Families who resided in Creggan in the Ballaghaderreen Roman Catholic Parish Records. Three of the families listed the Town of Cross on at least one or more of their baptismal records. Creggan is a Townland located just over 2 km southeast of Cross South in County Roscommon, Ireland. There were also families with Brennans in the Townland of Cross that may very well be related and are worth researching.

I have also identified 4 Brennan Families in the 1901 Creggan, Edmondstown DED Census Records and three Brennan families in the 1911 Creggan, Edmondstown DED Ireland Census Records. "B" refers to Baptism and "M" for Marriage; if two dates are given, the earlier one will be a birth date. Spelling variations will be added if there are deviations, otherwise the parents will be listed just once.

In addition to the above-mentioned Brennan families, the following Brennans sponsored Baptisms, were associated with Creggan records and may provide additional family members: Bridget Brennan sponsored the baptism of Marie Mylett (Daughter of William Mylett and Anne Flanagan) in December 1860; Mary Brennan sponsored the baptism of Bridget, daughter of John Kelly and Bridget Henly (Hanly in 926005) in October 1866; Michael Brennan sponsored the baptism of Michael, son of Dominick Doherty and Margret Frany in September 1876; Margret Brennan sponsored the baptism of Mary Jane, daughter of Michael Callaghan and Bridget Greely in June 1874; Catharine Brennan sponsored the baptism of Michael Thomas, son of Michael Sharkey and Bridget Monahan in October 1891, Patritius Brenan and Maria Brenan of Cregan sponsored the baptism of Pat, son of Jacobus and Margarita Brenan of Drimacoo in January 1865, James Brennan sponsored the baptism of Elizabeth, daughter of Patrick and Bridget Costello in April 1870 and finally James Brennan sponsored the baptism of Bridget, Daughter of B Corcoran and Michael Coleman in June 1902.

There was a heavy concentration of Brennan families in the Creggan Griffith's Valuation that was conducted in 1857. There were 5 different Brennans noted: Patrick, Bridget, John, James and Arthur. There were also three parcels held by Patrick Costello (possibly the same Patrick married to Bridget Brennan listed below) with 18a (Land and House), 19 (land) and 20 (land). There weren't any occupiers with surnames Gara, Woods or Wallace (other Brennan spouses). The only O'Donnell and McDonnell were John O'Donnell and John McDonnell. I will list the Brennan occupiers from the Griffith's in Creggan at the top of this compilation because I can't be certain to which families they belong.

Please contact me if you believe your Brennan ancestor may have come from Creggan, Cross or any of the Townlands in this immediate area that surround Ballaghaderreen, Roscommon so that we can compare findings, expand and improve the detail of this compilation.

Regarding the Johannus Keegan and Brigida Brenan family: This family resided primarily in Ballaghaderreen according to the majority of their children's baptismal records. There was one baptismal record; however, for Maria on January 4, 1861 indicating that they lived in Cregan.

Regarding the Thomas Gara/Bridget Brennan Family: There is clearly evidence that Bridget, Thomas and son Roger traveled to the United States. Bridget may have arrived in New York from Cobh, Ireland on April 29, 1929 on the Ship Baltic (she is listed as being born in Edmondtown, County Roscommon). She appears to have traveled alone. I am not sure of the family dynamics, but she appears at some point to return to Ireland and appears in the Ireland Civil Registration Deaths Index 1864-1958 as dying at age 80 Castlereagh reg district (Volume 4, pg 75). Roger appears to have traveled on the Ship Cedric out of Liverpool with arrival in New York March 22, 1926. He was listed as a Laborer, being born in Creggane, Ireland. It further appears that he married a Mary Oneil (possibly born Ougherard, County Galway?) She appears to have traveled from Queenstown New York on the Adriatic with her mother Josephine arriving in New York on September 5, 1913. Their last residence was Hollymount, Ballinrobe, Mayo. I will create a page on this family as more details come together. I have been unable to identfiy either parent in the 1901 or 1911 census but may have found their children in Creggane. I have a lot of questions and many gaps on this family's migration trail!

Regarding my personal Brennan/Corcoran Family Research: There was only one Corcoran Family identified as residing in Creggan in the Ballaghaderreen Records, Bridget Corcoran and Michael Coleman and their children Bridget, Bernard William, James and Michael Edward. The only other Corcorans documented in a Creggan record were Thomas and Margaret Mary Corcoran in the 1908 baptism of Bridget Durcan. There were no Corcorans in the 1901 or 1911 Ireland Creggan, Edmondstown DED Census Records.
