Brennan (Brannan) Families Identified in the 1871 Bradford Civil Parish, Bradford West End Sub Registration District, Yorkshire, England and Research into their Irish Origins

Liverpool was the port of entry for the vast majority of the Irish that departed the Connaght Counties of Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo and Galway. Many Irish immigrants unable to find work in Liverpool were drawn to places like Manchester, Bradford and Leeds and their thriving textile and other industrial development in the mid 19th century.

Keep in mind that the connections I draw are what appear to me to be the same family and need to be further analyzed to make sure the conclusion is correct (hopefully with supporting evidence such as GRO marriage records and baptismal records). Please use this information with that caveat in mind so that nothing is assumed and no stones are left unturned to assure it's your family and the connection is accurate. The vast majority of earlier census records fail to give a place name of origin in Ireland.

The Irish-born are spread throughout the Bradford West End 1871 Districts with the larger concentrations living in District 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24. The largest numbers of Irish immigrants appear to have been employed in the textile industry working with wool (worsted weavers, spinners and drawers, dyers, twisters, washers, comb minders, machine wool combers etc), Silk (weavers, delvers, spinners, combers, jobbers etc) and cotton (drawers, operatives, waste sorters etc). There also appeared to be increasing numbers working in the following occupations: forgeman, iron moulder, foundry man, excavator, Smith Strikers, Black Smiths, Puddlers, Miners and Iron works.

Brennan Families I have Identified in other Bradford Record Compilations during the 1870's:

  1. William Brannan the son of William and Margaret Brannan was born November 3, 1874 Bradford and baptized January 3, 1875 in the Parish Church of Bradford. They were residing at 50 Bolling Street Bowling? (West Yorkshire Births/Baptisms 1813-1910).

Other Observations: Irish Immigrants Michael (45, Laborer) and Harriet (40, Housekeeper) Bramer (as well as children Bridget 16 Spinner, Martin 10, Ann 7, Harriet 3 all born in Bradford) were living in District 19. Patrick Bramer (56 widowed laborer), son Thomas (17 Laborer Huddersfield), daughter Margaret (30, Spinner Ireland) and grandchildren Michael 4, Thomas 2 and Mary 7 months from Bradford were living with them as well. There was also a John (30 Hawker) and Mary (33 Woolen Mill Worker) in this same district.
