Brennan (Brannan) Families Identified in the 1881 Bradford Civil Parish, Bradford West End Sub Registration District, Yorkshire, England and Research into their Irish Origins

Liverpool was the port of entry for the vast majority of the Irish that departed the Connaght Counties of Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo and Galway. Many Irish immigrants unable to find work in Liverpool were drawn to places like Manchester, Bradford and Leeds and their thriving textile and other industrial development in the mid 19th century.

Keep in mind that the connections I draw are what appear to me to be the same family and need to be further analyzed to make sure the conclusion is correct (hopefully with supporting evidence such as GRO marriage records and baptismal records). Please use this information with that caveat in mind so that nothing is assumed and no stones are left unturned to assure it's your family and the connection is accurate. The vast majority of earlier census records fail to give a place name of origin in Ireland.

Regarding the Martin and Margerite Brannan Family in District 19 at 47 Longcroft Place: I believe there is a possibility that Martin Brannen might have married a Margaret Gallagher in Bradford in the quarter ending December 1866 (Free BMD: 9b, pg 340), but this remains to be proven. It appears that this family was indexed a "Brennans" in the 1891 Bradford West End census in District 13 on 80 Longcroft Place (children Michael, Thomas, Patrick, Anne, Bridget, John and Martin were noted). They again appear in the 1901 Bradford West Census in District 9 on 52 Longcroft Place, but Margerite appears to have died as Martin is listed as a widow (his son Michael 33 a single wool comb minder adn daughter Bridget a single cotton spinner were living with him).

Regarding the Michael and Bridget Brannan family in District 19 at 25 Longcroft Place: I traced this family from the 1861 Bradford West End Census where Michael 40 and his wife Bridget 35, Hawkers are living at Longcroft Place with children Bridget 14 Worsted Spinner born in Ireland, and Honor 7, Catharine 5, Patrick 1 and Margaret 3 all born in Bradford. They likely were born in Ireland based on their first daughter Bridget's age and birth origin. I can account for them in Bradford West End through the 1881 Census where Michael 52 and his wife Bridget 47 Pot Hawkers are living with daughter Catherine 24 comb minder, her brother Patrick 20 Bobbin Turner, brother Thomas 18 Engine Stoker, Sister Mary Ann 22 Stuff Wool Comber and Brother Michael 16 Bobbin Turner (all of which were born in Bradford). Grand daughter Mary McIntyre lives with them as well. An Annie Brannan appears to have married either a Thomas Brown or a James McIntyre in Bradford the quarter ending September 1876- could this be her mother? That remains to be proven. There was also a Mary McIntyre age 13 living with Patrick 26 and Mary 24 Brannan (all lodgers with the Quinn Family)in the 1891 Horton Civil Parish. Patrick was listed as being born in Bradford. This possibly could be brother Patrick as he was a Bobbin Turner in 1881 20 and is listed as 26 and a Wool Machine Minder in 1891. I have been unable thus far to find Michael and Bridget Brannan in the 1891 census or determine their exact origins in Ireland. There are many Brannans living on Longcroft Place when the 1891 Bradford West End Census was conducted. I think it is highly probable that many of them shared a common migration trail from Ireland and may be related.

The Mathew and Ellen Brannan (Brennan) family in District 20 of the 1881 Bradford West End Census at 128 Silsbridge Lane: The first evidence I have of this family is the 1851 Bradford Wet End Census in District 12 on Back Brick Row where Mathew (27 Mason's Laborer), wife Ellen (30) were born in Ireland, daughter Mary 3 in Staffordshire, brother Dominick (16 factory worker), lodgers Mary Brannan (40 Quilt Maker) and Bibby? Brannan (16 Spinner Factory) were all born in Ireland. Mathew (37 fish monger) and wife Ellen (44), children Patrick(3 Bradford), Mary (13 Stafforshire) were in District 21 living at 97 Longcroft Place in the 1861 Census. In the 1871 Bradford West End Census, Mathew (45 Fish Monger), wife Ellen (45), son martin (14 Worsted Spinner) and son Dominick (7 Scholar) were living at 3 Providence Street. Ellen appears to have died by the time the 1881 Bradford West End census is taken; Mathew (55 General Hawker) and son Dominick (17 General Laborer) were living at 128 Silsbridge Lane. I believe that daughter Mary who was born in Stafforshire (likely Wolverhampton) may have married a "Keenan" and had at least two children Mathew and Mary. It appears that Martin Brannan (son of Mathew and Ellen) was living with Mary Keenan (a 30 yr old widow Worsted Weaver) in District 13 in Bradford West End 1881 census.

The Bridget Brannan Family in District 13 at 4 Clayton Square of the 1881 Bradford West End Census: I believe I have found this family in the 1851, 1871 and 1881 Bradford West End Census. If my findings are correct, Bridget was a widow by the time the 1851 census was conducted. She had four children living with her at the time: John 14 and Patrick 12 born in Ireland, Ann 5 and Michael 2 born in Bradford living at 3 Goit Side. I have yet to find them in the 1861 census but in 1871, children Michael 21, Ann 22 and John 34 were living with her at 62 Glenaire Place in District 20. By 1881, Bridget is listed as being 70 and children John 44, Michael 31 and Ann 32 (all single) are still living with her at 4 Clayton Square. There is a death record for a Bridget Brannan (born about 1814) who died in Bradford in the quarter ending June 1890 at the age of 76. This may or may not be her as Bridget is quite a common given name.

The Dominick Brannan and Margaret Moore Family in District 19 of the 1881 Bradford West End Census: I believe that Dominick Brannan married Margaret Moore in Bradford in the quarter ending December 1863 (Volume 9b, page 307) per free BMD. In 1871, Dominic Brannon 32 is living with wife Margaret 38 with children John 4, Mathew 1 and Mary 6 in District 19 at 93 Longcroft Place. In District 19 of the 1881 Bradford West End Census Margaret is listed as a widow age 50 Wool Comber born in Ireland with unmarried children Mary 26 Worsted Spinner, John 24 Brick Layer's Laborer and Mathew 22 Worsted Warp Weaver living her at 25 Longcroft Place.
