Brennan Surname in Bohola Roman Catholic Parish Records, County Mayo, Ireland

The Bohola Roman Catholic Parish Records are covered in microfilm #1279230 items 14 and 15. The film is listed in the LDS film catalog as Parochial Registers of Bohola, 1857-1903 Catholic Church, Parish of Bohola. Bohola Roman Catholic Parish (formed in 1857) covers the Civil Parish of Bohola (Mitchell, 1988, p. 87). LDS Microfilm number 926003 also covers Bohola Civil Parish (the same range of years). I will order this film at a later date and add it to this section.

Item 14 of this film covers Bohola Parish Marriage Records beginning with October 29, 1857. The film I received was scanned in negative (black with white print) but the clarity and quality of the film appears to be pretty good.

Summary of findings for Item 14 and 15 of microfilm 1279230: Upon completion of Item 14 and 15 of this film, I have identified the marriage records for 64 different Brennan Families in Bohola Catholic Parish. They resided in the following Townlands in Bohola Civil Parish: Altbaun, Ardacarha, Bohola, Carrowkeel, Gortnasillagh, Lismiraun, Rathslevin, Shanaghy, Tooromin and Treanfohanaun. Treenabantry was also heavily represented as a residence of the Brennan Surname. It was not listed as a Townland in Bohola Civil Parish at the time the Griffith's Valuation was conducted but appears to be a townland there according to a variety of internet sources. Three other Townlands were also given: Argullien, Clogher and Touchnane. I am unsure as to their location. Keep in mind that there is another microfilm available on this Catholic Parish that I will order at some later date.

I have done my best to correctly transcribe these records, but after five or so hours behind a microfilm reader, the likelihood of mistakes in both interpretation and transcription most certainly increases. I have the microfilm and item numbers on which the records were found so you can confirm the information. In an attempt to minimize download times I have limited the information presented on each family. The records in this section will document Baptisms (B) and Marriages (M). I also have documented all of the baptisms and marriages sponsored/witnessed by Brennans; although these are not included online, they can yield valuable clues such as "circles of friends" and possible townlands that might provide a missing link. There are additional details in these records such as date of birth, sponsors, priests, and at times notes in the margin detailing marriages and deaths. If you feel that your family is in this compilation, please feel free to contact me and I will share with you the additional details.
