Brennan Families from the Townland of Ballaghaderreen, Kilcolman Civil Parish, County Roscommon, Ireland in Church, Census and Other Records
The Townland of Ballaghaderreen was transferred from County Mayo to County Roscommon, Ireland via a Local Government Act in 1898. Ballaghaderreen was one of 28 different Townlands transferred from Kilcolman Civil Parish in this act. I have found 17 different Brennan Families that describe Ballaghaderreen as their residence in the records of the Ballaghaderreen Catholic Parish microfilm. I have documented over 600 records in this film that involve either a Brennan family member, Brennan Baptismal Sponsor or witness at a wedding; unfortunately, many of them do not give a place of residence.
The following Brennans sponsored baptisms in records that identified Ballaghaderreen as a place of residence:
- Jacobus Brennan and Brigida Brennan were sponsors for Franciscus, son of Patritius Flannery and Maria Morrissroe in June 1861;
- Mary Brennan as well as Michael Corcoran sponsored the baptism of Ellen, Daughter of Charlie Ward and mary McDonagh in July 1910
- Bridget Brennan sponsored the baptism of Bernard, son of John Kelly and Margaret Mannion in June 1871.
- Brennans were named as sponsors for three children of Thomas Towey and Maria Coleman: James Brennan and Mary Brennan sponsored the baptism of Mary Honoria (born 4/24/1894 and Baptized 5/4/1894); Martin Brennan and Bridget Brennan sponsored the baptism of Ann (born 4/24/1896 and baptized 5/3/1896) and James Brennan sponsored the baptism of Thomas P (born 2/23/1904 and baptized 2/25/1904).
- John Brennan was a sponsor for the baptism of Mary Kate (daughter of Michl Healy and Margaret Towey) in July 1880
- Bessie Brennan sponsored the baptism of Mary, Daughter of Peter Towey and Peggy Hunt in August 1866.
- John Brennan was the sponsor for Patrick (son of John Quin and Honor Coleman) in November 1873
- Beesy Brennan was the sponsor for Anna (Daughter of John Mairne? and Beesy Cone) in November 1874. (looks like Manne in 926005)
- Mary Brennan was the sponsor for Michael, Son of Owen McGarry and Margt Frain in Mary 1879.
- Maggie Brennan sponsored the baptism of Ellen Agnes, Daughter of John Grady and Norah Carty in January 1897.
- Rose Brennan sponsored the baptism of Anne, Daughter of Martin Doherty and Bridget Cassidy in January 1869.
- Winifred Brennan of Ballaghaderreen witnessed the marriage of Martinus Dunbar (son of Patricii Dunbar of Lung) and Francis Flannery in February 1895.
- Cath Brennan sponsored the baptism of Thos, son of Pat Coleman and Mary Mullany in December 1868.
- Biddy (Bridget in 926005) Brennan sponsored the baptism of Bernard, son of John Kelly and Margaret Mannion in June 1871 (residence is listed as town).
- Bridget Brennan sponsored the baptism of Mary, Daughter of Pat Monaghan and Mary Giblin of Ballaghaderreen in July 1880.
- John Brennan sponsored the baptism of Mary Kate, Daughter of Michael Healy and Margaret Towey? July 1880 Ballaghaderreen.
Regarding Surname Bruen vs Brenan: There were several Bruen Families with origins in the Townland of Ballaghaderreen. At times the quality of the earlier records made deciphering Bruen vs Brenan quite difficult. There was a John Duffy and Bridget Bruen who had several children baptized in Ballaghaderreen in the 1870's. They were not included in this compilation because the later records appear to confirm the Bruen Surname. The same appears to apply to Thady Bruen and Johanna McGrath in 1861.
There were numerous Brennan marriage records in which Cathedral Ballaghaderreen was given as the marriage location; these were not included because residence in Ballaghaderreen was not noted.
There were five different Brennan entries in the 1901 Ireland Census for Ballaghaderreen, County Roscommon Ireland (they are included below). There were three Brennan Families documented in the 1911 Ireland census for Ballaghaderreen, County Roscommon, Ireland. They lived independently and are noted below.
Regarding Surname Giblin: The Ancestry.com Database on line "Ireland Births and Baptisms 1620-1911 lists Bridget Brennan (daughter of Michl Brennan and Bridget Giblin) as being born June 22, 1865 in Ballaghaderreen, County Roscommon. The record referred to FHL Film 10113. In Microfilm 1279232. I found numerous records for this family in both the 1279232 and 926005 films, but they all are associated with the Townland of Drumacoo in Kilcolman Civil Parish, County Mayo. I found Bridgets baptismal record from June 11, 1865, Drumacoo, Ireland. I will include them on a page on Drumacoo when I get a chance. Kate Brennan of Drumacoo and Thomas Giblin werer married in Ballaghaderreen Cathedral March 7, 1923.
Regarding Surname Duffy: There is a John Duffy and Bridgt Brenan (or Bruen) family that I have not included in this compilation because I think there is a good possibility that her surname is Bruen and not Brennan. They had three children: James, Mary and Michael and the baptismal record for Michael in 1878 clearly says Bruen. If i am in error in this ommission, please let me know!
Please contact me if you believe your Brennan ancestor may have come from the Ballaghaderreen, Roscommon area so that we can compare findings, expand and improve the detail of this compilation.
This is a work in progress and will be added to as I uncover more details about these families.
