The Thomas Brennan and Mary Cottle Family of Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England: An Analysis of his Migration from Kiltullagh, County Roscommon, Hers from Dunmore, County Galway, Ireland, and their Families Development in Huddersfield Yorkshire England

The Connaught Counties of Galway, Roscommon, Mayo and Sligo are heavily represented in the Huddersfield England Census Records when the county names are given as a place of birth. The amazing research compiled on the Irish in England by great authors like Donald Macraid, Roger Swift, Donald E Jordan Junior, Sheridan Gilley, Kevin O'Connor, John Belchem, Frank Boyce and L. W. Brady among others seems to support repeated migration trails from certain counties in Ireland to certain places in England.

My objective in this research is to analyze the Brennan Families in Huddersfield England Census records over the years to see migration pattern trends from certain counties, possible Civil Parishes in Ireland and even with families of the surname itself. I hope to eventually connect them to the Brennans that I am identifying in the Catholic Church Records in both County Mayo and County Roscommon Ireland. This will most definitely be a work in progress and all findings I speculate on would have to be proven for accuracy with GRO of England marriage records, church baptismal records and death records among other genealogical records. Please use this information with that caveat in mind so that nothing is assumed and no stones are left unturned to assure it's your family and the connection is accurate.

Regarding the 1891 Census in District 23: There is a Lawrence and Bridget Cottle family listed next to Thomas and Mary Brennan; however they reside on Castlegate and Thomas and Mary in Jowitt's Building. It is likely these two residents are in close proximity and as Mary's maiden name is Cottle it would be interesting to see if there is a connection between this Cottle family and hers from Galway. Of further interest, there is a Timothy Brannan, (also a bricklayer's laborer), a lodger from Ireland living with the Cottle family as well. It remains to be seen if there is any link between these surnames.

Regarding Death Records for Thomas Brennan and Mary Cottle: Assuming they stayed in Huddersfield and died there I have included a possible death record for Thomas in the quarter December 1846. According to the ages given in the census records (with births in 1862, 1865 or 1867) Thomas should be between 79 and 84 in 1946; This gentleman was 81 when he died in 1846. It is the closest match of all the Thomas Brennan's that died in Huddersfield between 1911 and 1946. I couldn't find any deaths for Mary Cottle in Huddersfield but there were two possible death records for Mary Brennan: Mary Brennan age 72 who died in the quarter March 1943 (Volume 9a, page 390); Mary Cottle Brennan would have been between 73-78 in 1943, and Mary E Brennan age 76 who died in December quarter 1945 (Volume 9a, 360, a more likely match as she would have been between 75 and 80 in 1845).

Another Genealogist, Adele, inspired this page with her research and connection to this family and has made a significant contribution to its creation. The Huddersfield Family of Thomas and Mary Brennan was large (like most Irish families of the day) with 11 children (2 were deceased by the time the 1911 census was conducted). The probabilities are great with a family of this size that other researchers of the descendents of these children may be researching this same line. If you feel you are descended from this Brennan family or others that migrated to Huddersfield from County Roscommon or Mayo please contact me, so that we can all work together with our individual pieces of the puzzle and find out how the Brennans of Huddersfield may be related!
