Brennan Tenants in County Roscommon, Strokestown Poor Law Union, and the Disposition of their Land

There are a variety of resources that document the occupiers of parcels of land in Ireland, rents owed, paid, in arrears as well as evictions enforced by their landlords. They include the Griffith's Valuation, the Cancelled Books of the Griffith's Valuation that shows how parcels changed hands over time, Landlord Estate Papers- many of which are at the NLI in Dublin, an array of books that identify eviction records extracted from a variety of sources and as I have noted below museums addressing the famine.

Strokestown Pool Law Union includes the following Civil Parishes: Part of Cloonfinlough, Bumlin, Creeve, Kilcooley, Killukin, part of Elphin, Kiltrustan, Kilglass, Lissonuffy, Kilmacumsy, Shankill and Termonbarry. This area is the easternmost, central part of County Roscommon.

In the following section I plan to add records of land disposition as I find them for the Brennans of County Roscommon, Strokestown Poor Law Union. Unfortunately, the records I obtained from the Cancelled books in the Valuation office in Dublin are incomplete. When I took digital pictures of the land transfers that are noted by crossed out names, color coded by year, my camera reverted back to black and white (due to low light levels or user error?) and I cannot differentiate the precise year. I will note who the land was transferred to (whether it be another Brennan or other) and give a date range if I can. I will have to contact the valuation office at a later date to do some research to help me fill in the gaps. It seems likely that if the parcel changed hands, they either died or immigrated elsewhere, but that remains to be seen. Please contact me if you can help "connect the dots."

There were 605 Families that were evicted from the Mahon Estate in Strokestown, County Roscommon in 1848. He rented out 10,000 acres that did not include his 1000 acre private demesne. I obtained the Brennans that were evicted from his Estate from the Strokestown Famine Museum Exhibit. Their parcels were in and around the Townland that are given below. If your family was a tenant for him you should check out this museum- it was well worth the stop! The Town of Strokestown is in Bumlin and Kiltrustan Civil Parish and Strokestown Poor Law Union. Major Dennis Mahon helped pay the journey of 1000 of his tenants to Canda aboard famine ships. A large number of them never reached their destination, dying in transit.

Major Denis Mahon evicted 185 from Gortloose, 156 from Kilordan More, 90 from Cloonraine, 212 from Kilmacranern, 35 from Aughadine (all five of these had Brennans who were evicted).
