The Patrick Brennan (Brannan) and Helen Morris Family of Huddersfield England: An analysis of their Migration from Ireland to Huddersfield England

The Connaught Counties of Galway, Roscommon, Mayo and Sligo are heavily represented in the Huddersfield England Census Records when the county names are given as a place of birth. The amazing research compiled on the Irish in England by great authors like Donald Macraid, Roger Swift, Donald E Jordan Junior, Sheridan Gilley, Kevin O'Connor, John Belchem, Frank Boyce and L. W. Brady among others seems to support repeated migration trails from certain counties in Ireland to certain places in England.

My objective in this research is to analyze the Brennan Families in Huddersfield England Census records over the years to see migration pattern trends from certain counties, possible Civil Parishes in Ireland and even with families of the surname itself. I hope to eventually connect them to the Brennans that I am identifying in the Catholic Church Records in both County Mayo and County Roscommon Ireland. This will most definitely be a work in progress and all findings I speculate on would have to be proven for accuracy with GRO of England marriage records, church baptismal records and death records among other genealogical records. Please use this information with that caveat in mind so that nothing is assumed and no stones are left unturned to assure it's your family and the connection is accurate.

Research Findings: There was a baptismal record for a John Henry Brennan in the St. Patrick's Church, Huddersfield England records that I believe is the John Henry in this family. He was born August 12, 1850 in Huddersfield England to Patrick and Helen? Morris. This record could be obtained from the Huddersfield Family History Society or the West Yorkshire Archive Service. These church records may be a goldmine of information on the rest of the family as well as it appears that William, Mary Ann, James, Ann and Roger were also born in Yorkshire, Huddersfield, England. I have found baptismal records for a Maria and a William, children of Patrick Brennan and Ellen Morris in the only microfilm that is available on this Church in the U.S. If the 1871 Patrick Brannan is the same Patrick then it would appear that Ellen or Helen? died sometime after the 1861 census. A check of the Free BMD of England for a death record and GRO office record could help confirm this. Further research in the St Patrick's Church records could also help sort this out. In a phonetic search of the Free BMD of England for deaths of Ellen Brannan in Huddersfield England between 1860 and 1871, there was one record that is likely her: Ellen Brennan 50 died in Huddersfield (Deaths March 1868) Volume 9a, page 240. Please check this site and verify the above information. I believe that their son James may have married Ellen before 1868 when their first child was born. Ellen was from Holmfirth an area south of Huddersfield. I have found them in both the 1871 (Kirkgate) and 1881 (Castlegate) census records (James is a Fruit and Potato Dealer).

I welcome any and all feedback, corrections- they benefit us all. If you believe that your ancestors might be related to this family please contact me!
