The Brennan and Coffey Families (and all Surname Variations) from the Townlands of Boghtaduff, Ardkill, Ishlaun and Drumnalassan, County Roscommon Ireland in the Ballaghaderreen Church, Ireland Census, Griffith's Valuation and other Records

The Townlands of Boghtaduff, Ardkill, Ishlaun and Drumnalassan were all part of Castlemore Civil Parish, County Mayo, Ireland until they were transferred to County Roscommon, Ireland. These four townlands lie close to the Mayo/Roscommon border with Boghtaduff being 2.7 km northwest of Ardkill, which is 3 km northwest of Ishlaun. Ishlaun is 3.3 km northwest of Drumnalassan. These townlands sit roughly midway between Kilmovee, County Mayo and Ballaghaderreen, County Roscommon with Boghtaduff and Ardkill lying closer to Kilmovee and Ishlaun and Drumnalassan being closer to Ballaghaderreen.

The Griffith's Valuation was completed for the Townland of Boghtaduff in 1857 and it included 931 acres. Viscount Dillon was the landlord for all but two occupiers, and he holds 2 parcels himself in fee. There is little of economic significance in this Townland, but there is a National Schoolhouse. (Griffiths, 1847-1864; 2003, Boghtaduff, Castlemore, Mayo).

The Ardkill Griffith's Valuation was completed in 1857 and it was composed of 446 acres. Viscount Dillon was the primary landlord with all but two parcels and he held one in fee. A forge was the only item of economic significance noted for this Townland. (Griffiths, 1847-1864; 2003, Ardkill, Castlemore, Mayo).

The Griffith's Valuation was completed for the Townland of Ishlaun in 1857 and it was composed of just over 368 acres. Viscount Dillon was once again the primarily landlord holding all but 7 parcels (6 of the 7 were held by Elizabeth Moore and Patrick Fitzpatrick held the other). From a commercial standpoint, there was very little with only a Forge, Pound, Herd's House and a Schoolhouse. (Griffith's, 1847-1864; 2003, Ishlaun, Castlemore, Mayo).

Drumnalassan's Griffith's Valuation was conducted in 1857. At that time it was composed of just over 518 acres. Elizabeth Moore was the primary landlord holding all but 10 parcels (Viscount Dillon hold 7 of the 10). There weren't any significant economic parcels in this Townland. (Griffith's, 1847-1864; 2003, Drumnalassan, Castlemore, Mayo).

The only Brennan or Coffey property occupier in the Townland of Boghtaduff in the 1857 Griffith's Valuation was Michael Coffey and he held two parcels (one of which he shared with Patk Gallagher, son of Hugh). There was a Michael Brennan who held property in Ishlaun and neither surname was noted in the Drumnalassan or Ardkill Griffith's Valuation.

The 1901 Ireland census showed two Coffey families in Boghtaduff (Ballaghaderreen DED): Michael and Kitty Coffey and family as well as a Maggie Coffey. The 1911 census for the same area showed a Bridget Coffey living with her sister, Mary Carney and family. Pat Brennan was living with his brother in law John Towey and his family in the Ishlaun 1901 census, but there were no Brennans or Coffeys noted in Ishlaun by 1911. There were no Brennans or Coffeys in the 1901 or 1911 Drumnalassan or Ardkill, County Roscommon, Ireland Census.

Please contact me if you feel your Brennan or Coffey ancestors (or any of the surname variations) may have been from this Mayo/Roscommon border area so that we can put the pieces of the puzzles together. It is clear after researching the Irish microfilm for several years that the vast majority of Irish families in the mid 19th century were large, often as many as 8-10 kids. Somewhere out there are descendents of our Irish ancestor's siblings researching their individual branch of the tree. Working together we will all get our trees back further!

Regarding the Mary Brennan/ John Towey Family of Ishlaun, Ireland: Major kudos to Bernard, a Genealogist from England and descendent of this family has most generously contributed information to fill in the pieces of the puzzle on this family's journey from Roscommon to England and some members migration to Philadelphia, USA. He has identified at least 16 children of this couple so there are a lot of descendents out there that we would love to hear from!

This is a work in progress and will be added to over time as I uncover other records to add to this compilation.

I will present the Griffith's Valuation records at the beginning of this compilation as I am uncertain to which families they below due to the commonality of given names.
