Catherine Armstrong: A County Mayo Landlord in the 19th Century

Catherine Armstrong was the primary Landlord in 7 of the 15 Townlands in Kilbride Civil Parish, Tirawley Barony when the Griffith's Valuation was conducted in 1856. These Townlands included Cabintown, Carrowcor, Carrowneden, Castletown, Moyny, Muingrevagh and Shanaghy. She was not documented in the "Landowners in Ireland" (Return of Owners of Land of one Acres and Upwards); a publication that was presented by the Local Government Board, Ireland in 1876. This would seem to indicate that the property changed hands sometime between 1856 and 1876.

I was unable to find any information about any sales of her parcels in the encumbered estates courts notations that were made quite extensively in J.F. Quinn's History of Mayo section on the "Fate of Mayo Landlords Due to the Famine Years."

I will be doing further research on the Armstrong family estates and add to this page in the future.
