Thank you for buying your copy of Journal number 29. We hope that you will find plenty of interesting articles and illustrations, ones that will help fill out the tapestry of the people, places and events of the greater Mallow area.In this year's volume you will find a significant number of contributions that deal with the 'trouble times' in Mallow. In the earlier years of the Journal the club tended to avoid covering the War of Independence or the Civil War. In recent years however there has been a resurgence of interest in the period and particularly in individual events at local level throughout the country. The articles covering the early years of the 20th century in this year's issue will be a valuable contribution to a more complete understanding of the period.
In his inaugural address recently, the new President, Michael D. Higgins contrasted the individualism of the Celtic tiger years with a more valued Irish characteristic, that created an 'individual mind to see the world in its own way' and he says that 'that individual innovation . . . has given Ireland many distinguished contributors in culture and science often insufficiently celebrated". We hope that the Mallow Field Club Journal contributes in its small way to the celebration of unsung but no less remarkable people who liad the foundations in various ways to build much of what is good about the country today.
If we manage to produce a Journal in 2012 it will be the 30th edition. It sometimes feels almost 30 times more challenging than previous years to compile quality articles and pictures that will maintain the standard produced in the Journal up to now. We would be only too happy to hear from our readers about items that could be submitted for our next edition.
