Mallow Field Club Journal

No. 25 - 2007

This is the 25th issue of the Mallow Field Club Journal, a jubilee of sorts for the club.

It is with a sense of achievement that we mark a quarter century of compilation of the local history of Mallow and its environs. The project began in 1982 with the publication of Journal No. 1: the gathering of articles for further issues has continued unabated to the present day and it appears that there is plenty more material to be written about to complete the picture of the doings and lives of the people of North Cork over the centuries.

On an occasion such as the 25th milestone we feel particularly grateful to our many contributors, critics and subscribers. We genuinely appreciate the continuing support of our many readers; hopefully you continue to enjoy the offering each year.

This year's edition is made up of contributions, some long, some shorter, on people and places, traditions and techniques of long ago. It is not necessary to list the contents here; however we are delighted to include an article on Mallow-born sculptor, Seamus Murphy. This year is the centenary of the birth of perhaps our most famous carver/sculptor and that jubilee has been marked in Cork by many events which are worthy of the contribution that Seamus Murphy made to Irish life in the past century.

The first of our winter programme was a lecture on Seamus Murphy, held in Mallow Library in conjunction with an exhibition dealing with Seamus Murphy and his work.
