Mallow Archaeological & Historical Society

Thank you for buying the Journal again; if this is your first journal we hope you will be impressed. In this issue, no. 24, we aim again to provide articles on a variety of topics that will continue to fill out the mosaic of local history of the Mallow area; although with the compilation of each journal we suspect that there are no boundaries to that mosaic.

A unique feature of this journal is the inclusion of accounts about the 1916-1922 period of Irish history. In the year gone by there was much remembrance and discussion of the events of ninety years ago. When, in 1966, the country almost came to a standstill to commemorate the rising Mallow held a major event at the racecourse to mark the occasion, we have an article on this event as well as other material relevant to the war of Independence and civil war. A pioneer of vocational education, J J O Connor is remembered; the opening of the new Library in Mallow is marked with a piece on history of library services in Cork; what the Cork Examiner had to record about Mallow 100 years ago is a regular feature and a short letter from father to daughter provides a chilling account of the effects of the revenge burning of the town in 1921. Following previous articles on the co-operative movement, there is an account of the beginnings of Ballyclough Co-op Creamery in that village.

As ever, it goes without saying that the lifeblood of the journal is the contributions and comments of our readers; please keep them coming.
