With satisfaction and pride we present to our readers the 20th issue of the Mallow Field Club Journal. This brings to 320 the number of articles filling 3,400 pages of print and contributed by 115 different authors.As editors, we often wonder whether there is any more to be researched and written about the locality. Yet your support remains strong and items of interest continue to turn up each year.
Local history thrives on recording how an area with its people, its towns, buildings and streets, have changed and evolved over the years. Reading again the early articles in the Journal, such as Jim Copps' “A Walk around Mallow,” it is striking how much Mallow has evolved in the intervening years.
As 2002 is the 150 anniversary of Canon Sheehan's birth in Mallow, this year's Journal pays special attention to his life and work. To celebrate the occasion, a seminar was held in the Christian Brothers premises in Doneraile, at which five papers were presented. One of these is printed in this Journal together with two other articles on Canon Sheehan and his writings.
The front cover of this issue has a drawing by Michael O'Sullivan of the old footbridge at Mallow station, soon to be removed. There is scarcely a person in the North Cork area who has not struggled with their baggage up and over this old landmark.
