In Journal No. 6 for 1988, Mallow Field Club presents another collection of historical material which we hope our readers will find of interest. We wish to thank contributors to the Journal for the time and effort that the research and writing of historical articles entails.
1988 is Australian Bi-centennial year, and we salute that event with two Australian articles. John Curtin, the wartime Prime Minister of Australia, had his Irish roots in the townland of Kilpadder near Dromahane, about six miles from Mallow. Jepheson Quarry experienced the rugged life of early Melbourne, known to many Irish emigrants, both voluntary and enforced, during the 1840's.
We are glad to note that the work of recording gravestone inscriptions in Mallow, and the indexing Parish records under the auspices of FAS is now bearing fruit. Results for Mallow and neighbouring parishes are becoming available at the Parish Centre, Mallow, and genealogical queries for the district can now be directed there. We compliment all the people working on this project and the agencies involved for a job well done.
